Candidates line up for merged RNeSu board

No snow! Winter-oriented businesses are suffering

ADDISON COUNTY — A year ago at this time, Vermonters could look out their windows at hillsides blanketed in a foot of snow in some places. This year, that same view yields mostly brown ground, trees devoid of leaves and not a snowflake to be found. In past weeks, temperatures have risen as high as into the 40s and 50s.

State OKs ACSU merger plan, and Otter Valley merger

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Agency of Education (AOE) last week gave its seal of approval to governance consolidation plans for three school districts — including one in the Middlebury area and one in the Brandon area.

The Dec. 15 decision paves the way for residents in the seven communities the Addison Central Supervisory Union to decide on March 1 whether their schools should be governed by a single board and funded through a single budget.

Former Middlebury President Ron Liebowitz to lead Brandeis University

WALTHAM, Mass. — Ronald D. Liebowitz, who stepped down as the 16th president of Middlebury College this past June, has taken a similar job at a Boston-area educational institution.

Brandeis University’s Board of Trustees on Thursday announced that Liebowitz has been named the ninth president of the Waltham, Mass., school.

Liebowitz will begin his leadership role at Brandeis on July 1, 2016.

BRISTOL — School boards across the state are facing additional challenges as they draft budgets for the 2016-2017 school year.

Health insurance costs through the Vermont Education Health Initiative — used by most school districts — are up 7.9 percent, at the same time as Act 46 is putting a squeeze on per pupil spending.

Greg's market property slated to be sold at public auction

MIDDLEBURY — The former owner of Greg’s Meat Market at 3 Elm St. in Middlebury has filed for bankruptcy protection and the property is expected to be sold at a public auction early next year.

That news was delivered to the Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday by Jamie Gaucher, the town’s director of business development and innovation. Gaucher also noted that the mortgage on the Greg’s property is being held by TD Bank.

Rail bridges plan could span 4 years

MIDDLEBURY — The proposed fix for Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges has now been budgeted for $40 million, with construction affecting portions of the village area during parts of as many as four calendar years.

This latest information comes from Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) and Kubricky Construction officials, who recently presented Middlebury officials with a revised budget and construction timetable based on project designs now deemed 60-percent complete.

Cider producers partner with Pabst

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Hard Cider (VHC), Middlebury-based brewer of the popular Woodchuck cider, has entered a partnership with one of the largest American-owned breweries, the Pabst Brewing Co.

The 15-year agreement, signed this past Friday, gives Pabst exclusive promotions and marketing rights to the sale and distribution of all Vermont Hard Cider brands as well as those of its parent company, Ireland-based C&C Group. The agreement will take effect March 1, 2016.
