BRISTOL — A recently awarded historic preservation grant will help restore a 150-year-old barn on the Rocky Dale Gardens property in Bristol.

“We’re elated,” said Rocky Dale owner and landscape designer Ed Burke, of the $15,000 matching grant from the Vermont Department of Housing and Community Development’s Division for Historic Preservation.

“It’s still a costly and uphill battle for us to do this, but we find it incredibly important to this homestead and to this business.”

SALISBURY — Salisbury’s unlined landfill could cease accepting trash by the end of this year.

The local selectboard is preparing to close the community landfill in the aftermath of a Town Meeting Day referendum that saw Salisbury residents vote 229 to 98 to shut down the facility.

In the meantime, Salisbury will pursue membership with the Addison County Solid Waste Management District, which coordinates the solid waste and recycling needs for the vast majority of towns in the county.

ADDISON COUNTY — As the latest revision of proposed farming practice rules loosens requirements on an estimated 1,000 Vermont farms, some in the agriculture community are wondering what happened to the rallying cry “All in!” on Lake Champlain cleanup.

“We went into this water quality understanding that we (farmers) own 40 percent of the problem. And we are in, and we are working,” said Marie Audet of Bridport’s Blue Spruce Farm at a recent luncheon with county legislators.

Caring canine at Neshobe DOG+KID.JPG

BRANDON — In a quiet corner of the student support room at the Neshobe Elementary School in Brandon, a boy reads and a dog listens.

It’s Friday, and third-grader William Burt, 9, is carefully reading aloud to Ivan, a two-year-old German shorthaired pointer, and Ivan’s owner, Kristie Adams.

Ivan is a therapy dog, and once a month Adams brings him to Neshobe through a program offered by Caring Canines Therapy, a nonprofit group based in Massachusetts. He is one of three dogs that visit the student support room at Neshobe to do just that: support.

WEYBRIDGE — Many Addison County residents will be closely watching the Vermont House as it fields a proposed law aimed at giving communities more input in the siting of solar arrays.

Bill S.230, endorsed by the state Senate last Thursday by a 22-3 tally, encourages communities to develop energy sections within their respective town plans that specify their solar siting priorities and specific locations within their borders where renewable energy projects could be sited.

SaltPile6380.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — When it comes to the economy, Mother Nature giveth and she taketh away.

The almost snow-free winter of 2015-2016 has cost area ski resorts thousands of dollars in lost revenues, but has saved the state of Vermont and municipal public works departments an avalanche of money that would have been spent on overtime, sand and salt expenses during an average winter.
