Mongolia film earns major recognition

MIDDLEBURY — A lot of people think filmmaking involves shoots in exotic locations with a pampered cast and crew.

Middlebury’s Sas Carey and Fred Thodal will quickly set them straight.

The two friends spent three weeks in a frigid province of northern Mongolia last summer shooting a documentary on nomadic reindeer herders taking their animals for their annual migration to even colder climes. The filmmakers roughed it, riding assorted quadrupeds through the frigid landscape, overnighting in tents while powering their equipment with a solar panel.

Date set for vote on governance of Bristol-area schools

BRISTOL — Residents in the Bristol-area towns in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union will vote on whether to institute a unified union governance structure that would put all schools in the district under one school board and one budget.

The ANeSU Act 46 committee announced last Friday that it will hold a vote on a unified union school governance structure for the five-town area.

Lincoln town office moves to temporary new home

LINCOLN — “It’s like having new roommates,” said Lincoln Town Clerk Sally Ober as she looked around the town office’s snug new home-away-from-home in the Lincoln Library one day last week.

Ober, Lincoln Treasurer Lisa Truchon, Lister David Harrison and Zoning Administrator Bob Hall are tucked in, desk to desk, around the library’s Community Room for the next six months while Lincoln constructs a new town office.

Dunne outlines formula for economic recovery

MIDDLEBURY — Hartland Democrat and gubernatorial candidate Matt Dunne is pitching an economic recovery plan that he said would nurture growing businesses, create new jobs, weatherize aging apartment buildings and reduce the state’s carbon footprint, all at the same time.

Dunne shared his plan, and positions on other issues ranging from solar siting to health care, during a far-ranging interview at the Addison Independent on Thursday, May 5.

MIDDLEBURY — At first glance, most of the items being collected for the latest exhibit at Town Hall Theater’s Jackson Gallery look quite pedestrian.

A bottle of water.

An inexpensive Chinese lantern.

An old leather vest.

A small, crocheted angel.

A far cry from the distinguished portraits, vivid watercolors and delicate craftwork often on display at the Jackson Gallery.

Well-known public servant returns after extended medical leave

MONKTON — Back on Feb. 18, at about 6 a.m., calls went out to the Monkton Fire Department, Vergennes Area Rescue Squad and Vermont State Police: A car had gone off Hollow Road in Monkton and hit a tree.

According to state police, the driver had “suffered a medical event” and lost control of his vehicle.

That driver was well-known public servant Ken Wheeling, for 40 years the Monkton town moderator and zoning administrator; he also in recent years handled the zoning job in Ferrisburgh and Waltham.
