Records, fun mark 7th Maple Run

Posted on May 7, 2015 |
By Angelo Lynn

MapleRun4253.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Two course records were set at the seventh annual Middlebury Maple Run this past Sunday as the 700-plus runners complete the 13.1-mile course under sunny skies, a brisk south wind, and temperatures that started in the mid-50s and rose to the mid-70s by midday. While the temperatures were ideal, the brisk headwinds from the south presented some challenge to runners along the exposed Sheep Farm Road in Weybridge and along South Street for miles 9 through 11, before being a tailwind for the last two-miles of the race.

BRISTOL — More than 200 Starksboro residents packed the auditorium at Mount Abraham Union High School on Saturday morning for a special meeting to reconsider the budget Robinson Elementary School voters approved in February.

After more than an hour of debate, those residents approved a spending plan that was larger than the figure originally warned for the Feb. 28 annual meeting, but less than the figure that had been approved at that February meeting.

Painter in Vergennes makes art in a meditative state

VERGENNES — Pacing the floor in paint-speckled slippers, Peter Fried leads a tour of his small gallery and studio. The narrow space, previously used as a shoe store, had high ceilings with a wide glass window facing Main Street in downtown Vergennes.

The scene in Fried’s space is that of creative activity just paused. Two pieces of crusty bread smeared with peanut butter sit next to partially completed drawings, a pair of easels stand idle at opposing ends of the room and all around him, the white walls are covered with samples of his work.

Salamanders on the move.jpg

MONTPELIER — You may have already heard the spring peepers or wood frogs calling in your backyard. Or perhaps you’ve noticed salamanders crawling over rocks in a nearby stream. The arrival of spring brings the return of reptiles and amphibians to the Vermont landscape.

The frog calls you hear each spring are part of the animals’ breeding behavior, according to zoologist Mark Ferguson with the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department.

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh residents on Tuesday will decide the fate of a second Ferrisburgh Central School budget proposal, one that will increase spending over the current level by 1.94 percent.

The $3.62 million spending plan that lost on Town Meeting Day, 302-267, would have increased FCS spending by about 3 percent.
