Porter Medical Center plans affiliation with UVM Health Network

MIDDLEBURY — The Porter Medical Center Board of Directors and the University of Vermont Health Network Board of Trustees have voted unanimously to sign a non-binding “letter of intent” to formally negotiate terms under which PMC would join the University of Vermont Health Network (UVMHN) as an affiliate.

The Oct. 5 action by both boards follows an in-depth exploration by the PMC community on the pros and cons of affiliation with UVMHN.

Vergennes church seeks power from above ... solar power

VERGENNES — St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes will soon be getting a direct connection to the heavens — through 87 solar panels that Bristol Electronics will start installing on the south-facing roof of St. Peter’s Parish Hall this month.

After The Rev. Yvon Royer, who serves both St. Peter’s and the St. Ambrose Parish in Bristol, learned that Rutland’s St. Peter’s Parish earlier this year had such an array installed, in early August he proposed the idea for the rooftop array to the Vergennes Parish.

Students take a bow for their marvelous masks

MIDDLEBURY — More than a half-dozen Mary Hogan Elementary School sixth-graders will magically transform into a variety of colorful, whimsical creatures as part of the Opera Company of Middlebury’s staging of the much-celebrated “The Magic Flute” at the Town Hall Theater this Thursday through Saturday.

It will indeed be a string of creative “firsts” for the children. The Magic Flute will mark their debuts in an opera. And it will be the first time they will have designed their own attire for an on-stage performance.

ACSD board votes to back progresssive curriculum

SHOREHAM — The educational sea change in Middlebury-area schools continued on Tuesday night in Shoreham, where the Addison Central School District (ACSD) board unanimously approved what will be a three-year effort to adopt the International Baccalaureate program within all nine of the district’s schools.

New Haven finalizes Green Line deal

NEW HAVEN — Over a year of negotiations culminated at Tuesday night’s selectboard meeting, when the New Haven selectboard approved and then signed an agreement with developers of the Vermont Green Line to site a 400 megawatt power line converter station in New Haven.

The Vermont Green Line will bring wind and hydro power from upstate New York into the New England grid at the VELCO substation in New Haven. The deal is expected to funnel millions of dollars into town coffers in exchange for allowing construction of the huge converter station.

Orchards see smaller but sweeter apples at end of dry growing season

ADDISON COUNTY — Apples being harvested in Addison County this fall are smaller and overall yield is down, following trends throughout the Northeast, say local growers.

But local consumers can expect plenty of beautiful apples with some added zing, as the lack of rain and hotter temperatures have intensified flavor and sweetness.

VERGENNES — A familiar face is greeting new and current members of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes this fall.

Vergennes resident and former city afterschool program director Jill Strube took over as executive director of the city youth club on Aug. 31. She became just the club’s third executive director since it was founded in the Vergennes National Guard Armory in the late 1990s.

Vt. wins federal grants to help victims of violence

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont will receive more than $9 million in federal funding to support victims of domestic violence and other violent crime in some of the state’s most underserved areas, Sen. Patrick Leahy announced Tuesday in Middlebury.

People fleeing violence in rural areas often struggle to find the help and resources they need, he said.
