Police charge man with assault at fairgrounds

NEW HAVEN — A Ferrisburgh man will have to appear in court to answer a charge of aggravated assault after he allegedly knocked another man unconscious a the Addison County fairgrounds early Saturday morning.

Vermont State Police report that on Sunday, Sept. 21, at approximately 22 minutes past midnight troopers responded to the fairgrounds for a report of an assault. When they arrived the troopers discovered that 35-year-old Joshua Bird of Franklin had been taken by ambulance to Fletcher Allen Health Care with a severe head injury.

Works of Viennese master who became Hallmark professor on display

MIDDLEBURY — EastView at Middlebury is hosting an exhibition of more than 20 paintings by Professor Frederick Jaeger, an exceptional artist and teacher who was active in Europe and America in the last century. Most of the 24 paintings have not been seen since before World War II, and never in the U.S.

The paintings come to the retirement community located off South Street Extension on loan from Jaeger’s son, George Jaeger of New Haven.

Hancock man accused of sexually assualting woman

HANCOCK — A Hancock man on Sept. 12 pleaded innocent in Windsor Superior Court, criminal division, to a felony charge of aggravated sexual assault, after police investigated allegations that the man repeatedly engaged in non-consensual sex with a female neighbor described in court records as having been diagnosed with a mental disability.

Milton bests Tiger boys' soccer in tournament

MIDDLEBURY — All three local high school boys’ soccer teams emerged with something positive out of the annual J.P. Carrara eDoc Innovations Tournament this past weekend.

Host Middlebury (2-5) earned a 2-0 first-round win on Thursday over Mount Abraham to reach Saturday’s final before falling to champion Milton, 3-1. MUHS won two out of three last week after an 0-3 start, with senior Drew Barnicle scoring four goals and setting up a fifth and junior goalie Wilder Perera playing well.

Eagle football silences Spaulding, 38-6

BARRE — The Mount Abraham/Vergennes football team spoiled host Spaulding’s first-ever night game this past Friday, routing the winless Tide, 36-6, and improving to 3-1 in the process.

The Eagles scored touchdowns on two of their first three possessions and did not allow Division II Spaulding to record a first down in the first quarter.

Soccer wrap-up: Tigers post wins, VUHS ties, Eagles and Otters fall short

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school soccer in the latter half of last week, the Middlebury girls and boys posted wins, the Vergennes boys earned a tie, but the Mount Abraham boys and both Otter Valley teams came up short.

The VUHS girls also hosted Mount Abe on Friday, and the local boys’ teams saw more action in the second day of the Tigers’ annual tournament; see stories.
