Yuki Takeda isn't your average casual whistler. Earlier this month, he returned from the International Whistlers Conference in Louisburg, North Carolina with a third place trophy.

Takeda, a Middlebury College sophomore, has been attending the prestigious whistling conference since 2008, winning first place in teen divisions in 2010 and 2011. He competes in both the classical and popular divisions, but says his favorite thing to whistle is jazz improvization. Back home in Middlebury, he's performing with his jazz quintet at 51 Main from 10 to 12 p.m. tonight.

ADDISON COUNTY — The warm, dry weather this spring is unusual, but to some farmers it’s come as a welcome change from last year.

According to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, precipitation totals at the Burlington weather station are running about 3.3 inches below average, at just over 7 inches since Jan. 1. Vermont also saw record high temperatures in March. With little precipitation and very little snowmelt, the fields and forests are unusually dry.

I knew the minute I heard the clicking noise that it was all over.

My computer had been acting up for a couple days, running the fan more than usual, opening applications slowly. Not one to lose faith in my appliances, I’d just ignored it and hoped the problem would resolve itself.

MONTPELIER — Lawmakers on Wednesday seemed poised to move the discussion of rights for migrant workers in Vermont one step forward.

The bill under scrutiny in the Vermont House was Senate Bill 238, which examines the possibility of allowing undocumented workers to obtain driver’s licenses and non-driver identification. If passed, a study committee would examine the ways that a program could work over the summer and report back to the Legislature when it reconvenes in January 2013.
