Monkton tussles over proposed 35.9-acre quarrying operation

MONKTON — The Monkton Development Review Board (DRB) is nearing a decision on whether to permit a contentious application for a 30-plus acre quarry off of Monkton Road.

According to the application filed by Brisson Stone LLC and David Shlansky’s Burchfield Management Company LLC, “Brisson Stone will rely on drilling and blasting rock ledge to produce unconsolidated rock and gravel that will be collected on-site.” Burchfield Management filed the application, and the two enterprises are working together on this project.

The class — titled "Are You Talkin' to Me?" and taught by Lindsay Pontius and Neil Worden — grew out of the notion that combat on the stage is supposed to look scary but is actually a careful and safe skill. Participants were taught hand-to-hand stage combat techniques and basic weapons in order to perform some of the most infamous fights in theater history.

Jackman's pushes from fossil fuels to solar power

BRISTOL — Jackman’s Inc., a provider of carbon-heavy heating fuels like kerosene and No. 2 heating fuel, is giving solar a go.

The Bristol company, which got its start by selling firewood and coal in 1930, has long specialized in offering a range of heating options to its customers. In the last decade, the company began dealing pellets and bio diesel.

When I moved back to the U.S. from China in December 2010, I felt rootless.

Growing up in a small township in western Pennsylvania and having graduated from a college of 1,600, I was fortunate to have had my formative years shaped by tight-knit communities. While I found a similar sense of support teaching at a Chinese public school after graduating from Kenyon College, that feeling of community eluded me the following year.

State starts review of hospital budget plan

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Hospital officials are asking state approval for a fiscal year 2013 budget of around $69 million, including a 4.2-percent increase in net revenues and a boost of 5 percent in the rates charged for medical procedures.

Police jail Bristol woman for 60-plus bags of heroin

BRISTOL — The Vermont State Police’s drug task force arrested Katherine Heffernan, 27, of Bristol on Tuesday, Aug. 7, for knowingly possessing heroin with the intent to distribute it, U.S. District Court documents show.

Drug task force officials say they found more than 60 bags of heroin and more than $9,000 in Heffernan’s Mountain Street home, in her car and on her person. U.S. District Judge John M. Conroy sent Heffernan to jail on Aug. 8. She is due to appear before him again on Aug. 22 for a preliminary hearing in Burlington.

Phosphorus runs through local rivers

ADDISON COUNTY — Data released earlier this year showed that in 2011 the Otter Creek poured more than 206 metric tons of phosphorus into Lake Champlain — almost twice the 18-year average of 121 annual metric tons.

An increase in phosphorus, which fuels growth of cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, is not viewed by staff at the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources (ANR) as a positive harbinger in their effort to clean up Lake Champlain.

Police on the lookout for counterfeit cash

BRISTOL — Police are urging local businesses and vendors at Addison County Fair and Field Days to be on the lookout for counterfeit $5 and $10 bills this week.

An anonymous tip led Bristol police and the U.S. Secret Service agents on Tuesday to arrest Mildred Martin, 29, of Bristol for possession of a regulated drug.

But that’s not why the federal and local authorities stopped Martin, according to Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs. They were informed that she and another person had counterfeit money and a firearm on national forest land.

New Haven firefighters douse home blaze
