NEW HAVEN — Addison County Fair and Field Days attendance dropped this year from typical numbers, and even further from 2015, which was a banner year.

About 27,000 people paid their way into the New Haven fairgrounds between Aug. 9 and 13, according to the Field Days business manager, about 10,000 fewer than 2015.

But Field Days board member Ken Button said although that drop-off appears dramatic, it was, while disappointing, not that far off from attendance in an average year.

VERGENNES — Adding a second porch door, higher porch railings and stairs from that porch down toward a rear parking lot might at first not seem like that big a deal for the Bixby Memorial Free Library.

But those simple changes to the porch at the 104-year-old Vergennes landmark’s west end, along with the planned addition of push bars to the library’s front doors, serve a key purpose: They are key fire-safety upgrades that increase the Bixby’s legal capacity from 50 people to 200.

VERGENNES — While Bixby Memorial Free Library officials and patrons last week celebrated recent work that allows more people to enter the city landmark at the same time (see related story), the library board members are also amid a months-long process that will help them decide how the Bixby will use its new capacity.

By the end of the year, Bixby officials intend to have in place a new strategic plan that should cover at least the next three years.

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh Volunteer Fire Department last month took delivery of a new pumper fire truck that is making a tremendous difference in how efficiently and safely department firefighters can deal with fires and other incidents, according to Fire Chief Bill Wager.

“It’s a big step forward,” Wager said. “The truck was designed primarily for safety and enhanced service, and our ability to provide more services from the same vehicle.”
