Federal grant helps city schools run summer and afterschool programs

VERGENNES — The second year of Vergennes Union High School and Vergennes Union Elementary School summer programs funded by an $830,703 21st Century Learning Centers (21C) Grant is just now winding down, and includes a wide variety of offerings.

VUHS has been running summer and afterschool programs with help from 21C grants since 2009, when the school was first awarded $487,000 to support programming.

Students learn outdoor skills as they prep for 'Zombie Apocalypse'

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union Middle School language arts teacher Meghan McGrath on Thursday morning gave 10 incoming middle school students their final instructions before they left a Vergennes Union High School classroom to prepare for a zombie apocalypse.

“Grab a snack. Grab a tool,” McGrath said.

Orwell's Louis Hall reflects on decades serving on the fire department, rescue squad

ORWELL — Orwell native and dairy farmer Louis Hall can’t exactly recall how he ended up on the Orwell Volunteer Fire Department 48 years ago. 

“I really don’t remember how I got started,” said Hall, now 71. “I joined in ’67, and I don’t remember if somebody asked me. It wasn’t one of those things where I had a burning desire all my life. I just joined.”

Peter Golenbock’s “Red Sox Nation” (Triumph Books, updated in 2015 to include the 2013 season) probably is not a book for everyone, not even all Sox fans.

Despite the book’s wealth of fascinating details, it might take a touch of masochism for Sox fans to revisit the team’s many decades of failure between 1918 and 1967, mostly due to management decisions based on poor talent evaluation, petty biases, alcoholism and racism.

Larger ANwSU towns set tax rates; schools driving rate hikes

VERGENNES — The Department of Education’s release late last week of final homestead education tax rates allowed Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns to begin setting their overall tax rates, which in Addison, Ferrisburgh and Vergennes have increased by a range of 3.2 percent in Addison to 6.2 percent in Ferrisburgh.

Underlying those increases are residential school tax hikes that were in a range between 6.4 percent in Ferrisburgh and 7.1 percent in Vergennes.

Driver in bike case cited only for DUI, not charged in cyclist's death

MIDDLEBURY — Holly Gonyeau, 36, of Ferrisburgh pleaded innocent on Monday in Addison Superior Court’s Criminal Division in Middlebury to driving under the influence of alcohol during the June 17 accident that claimed the life of a cyclist on Greenbush Road in Ferrisburgh. Family of the cyclist wonder why she did not face more severe charges that could have included vehicular homicide.

Marlins swim team equals its best winning record with another victory

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Marlins defeated St. Albans, 275-164, at the Middlebury town pool on July 16 to finish the Champlain Valley Swim League regular season with a 4-3 record, which according to team organizers is the Marlins’ first winning mark in several years.

Mount Abe Little League all-stars claw way into tourney final

SHELBURNE — The Mount Abraham 9- and 10-year-old Little League all-star team came up short of a district title in June and July competition, but won six games and reached the championship game for what team officials believe is the first time ever.

Although the athletes competed under the Mount Abe banner, the team also featured three players from Middlebury Area Little League towns, two from Cornwall and one from Salisbury.

Legion baseball nets first victory; season ends

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County American Legion baseball team on Sunday concluded its 2015 campaign by dropping a doubleheader to visiting Franklin County, but not before a split of a Thursday twin bill at Montpelier gave AC its first victory of the summer.

On Thursday, AC (1-17) dropped the opener to Montpelier, 12-5, before breaking through to win the nightcap, 13-8. Those games were originally scheduled in June.

Driver whose car killed bicyclist charged only with DUI

MIDDLEBURY — Holly Gonyeau, 36, of Ferrisburgh pleaded innocent on Monday in Addison Superior Court, Criminal Division, in Middlebury to driving under the influence of alcohol during the June 17 accident that left a cyclist on Greenbush Road in Ferrisburgh dead, but she did not face more severe charges.

That DUI charge on which Gonyeau was arraigned on Monday carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a $750 fine.
