Clippings: Anecdotes, data tell same story

Anecdotes, a single relatable story, apparently trump data.

We value stories more than unwieldy columns of numbers when we make decisions.

For example, taxes. Hey, we might be rich someday, why would we want millionaires to pay as much as their secretaries? Fantasy outweighs the reality that 99 percent of us aren’t suddenly going to join the 1 percent, really by definition.

MIDDLEBURY — Division I Burlington on this past Wednesday won both the boys’ and girls’ sides of a track and field meet hosted by Middlebury Union High School at Middlebury College, but the Tigers and the visiting Mount Abraham and Vergennes teams, all D-II squads, had highlights.

Burlington won the girls’ meet with 145 points, with MUHS (52) edging Mount Abe (46) for second and VUHS in third (9). The already small VUHS team was shorthanded because several students, including steady point-scorers, were on a school language trip.

FERRISBURGH — A part of the nation’s history — or at least a fanciful version of a local legend — will come to life at Ferrisburgh Central School on Friday morning.

At 10:30 a.m., the 17 members of kindergarten teacher Josh Brooks’ class will present their version of how American Commodore Thomas MacDonough outfoxed the British at the mouth of Otter Creek.

In the pupils’ short play, MacDonough receives help from, among others, a fictional farm boy, George Washington, and Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys.

VERGENNES — The new Vergennes Union Elementary School principal has degrees from Middlebury College and the University of Vermont, is now serving as the president of the Vermont Principals’ Association and has nine years of administrative experience at Mount Abraham Union and Proctor Junior/Senior high schools.

Those and other impressive bullet points on June Sargent’s résumé helped her stand out among 16 candidates and three finalists for the job, said VUES board chairwoman Tara Brooks.

VERGENNES — In a hard-fought, if not necessarily artistic, high school boys’ lacrosse game on Tuesday, Mount Abraham snapped a third-quarter tie at Vergennes and held on for its first win of 2012, 9-7.

After VUHS sophomore attacker J.T. O’Brien knotted the score at 4-4 at 55 seconds after halftime, the Eagles went on a 4-1 run over the next seven minutes, including both of freshman middie Gus Catlin’s goals in the game, a goal and an assist from senior attacker Conor McDonough, and one of sophomore Travis Bachand’s team-high four goals.

It’s a hectic time of the year, with Town Meeting Day coinciding with many winter athletic teams in playoffs, and then our Spring Sports Report blending with 20-degree nights, 80-degree days and heated debates on religious expression up in my news beat.

That makes it a perfect time for some random, scattershot reflections on the sports world. To whit:

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team had little trouble with a longtime rival on Friday, when the Tigers thumped Mount Anthony, 18-5.

Nine Tigers scored, led by sophomore middie Emily Robinson’s five goals, as MUHS improved to 2-1.

The Tigers’ only loss has come to a 4-1 Rutland team in their opener, and in that 10-8 road setback MUHS played without senior standout midfielders Chrissy Ritter and Brandi Whittemore.

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union Elementary School fourth-grader Kathryn Wyckoff has always loved to read, write and paint, and for the past year or so has worn a feather in her hair.

Thanks to those language and artistic skills, Kathryn now has a feather in her cap, too.

Kathryn, a 10-year-old Panton resident, just won a statewide student poster contest sponsored by the Federal Women’s Program Council of Vermont.

STUDIO CITY, Calif. — A Vergennes native competed on the popular daytime game show “The Price is Right” last week, and her appearance will be broadcast this coming Friday.

According to a Price is Right spokesperson, Theresa McDonough’s appearance will be broadcast at 11 a.m. this Friday on Channel 3.

What prizes McDonough, a former Vergennes Union High School student, may have won or whether she earned a shot at the program’s trademark “Showcase” are, of course, closely held secrets prior to the broadcast.
