State to put traffic light in Ferrisburgh village

FERRISBURGH — The Agency of Transportation has pledged within the next several years to put traffic lights at the Ferrisburgh intersection of Route 7 with Little Chicago and Middlebrook roads, which is in the heart of the town’s population center and is near Ferrisburgh Central School.

Tiger boys' soccer thumps St. J; on to semi-final

MIDDLEBURY — On Friday it became official: 2012 is the best season for the Middlebury Union High School boys’ soccer program since the 1970s.

And after the top-seeded Tigers’ 3-0 win over No. 9 St. Johnsbury in a Division I quarterfinal, the program is two victories — granted in games that no one in Chittenden County will expect the 14-1 Tigers to win — away from the school’s first soccer title.

Tiger football tames Rutland Raiders, 42-14

RUTLAND — The No. 5 Middlebury Union High School football team rolled over host No. 4 Rutland on Friday, 42-14, in a Division I quarterfinal, by rushing for about 500 yards.

The 6-3 Tigers will next travel to face undefeated two-time defending champion Hartford in a semifinal. Their date with the top-seeded, 9-0 Hurricanes had yet to be officially announced as of Sunday, but was expected to be set for 7 p.m. this coming Friday.

Eagle win highlights girls' soccer

ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abraham won twice to reach the Division II semifinals and highlight local girls’ soccer teams’ postseason efforts last week.

In other games, Middlebury, Vergennes and Otter Valley all dropped first-round road matches to higher seeds.

Vergennes sets public forum on 6,000-square-foot police station

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen agreed on Tuesday to adopt a 6,076-square-foot, 24-room building as a working model for a new police station, and they set a Nov. 27 public informational meeting to explain to residents why city officials believe the building is necessary and hear feedback from taxpayers.

Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel said the draft plan has won approval from law enforcement officials around Vermont and is designed to meet the needs for a 10-man city department now and for the foreseeable future.

Panton working on town projects

PANTON — Panton selectmen have in recent months been overseeing a number of projects to town properties, many to completion.

The most prominent, paving of much of Panton Road, was completed prior to their Oct. 2 meeting. The town also was set to review bids on Oct. 3 for an upgrade of the Dead Creek Bridge, but that meeting was rescheduled.

The highway department also improved a stretch of West Road and installed surveillance cameras at the town garage to help deal with what town officials called persistent theft problems.

Mt. Abe boys' soccer net victory with dramatic OT goal

BRISTOL — Heading into the second overtime of Tuesday’s first-round Division II playoff game in Bristol, the Rice and Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer teams had played 195 scoreless minutes this fall, a 0-0 tie at Rice on Oct. 5 and a tense 80 minutes of regulation and then Tuesday’s 15-minute first overtime.

Tiger football routs CVU, Raiders up next

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School football team put a rain-soaked exclamation point on its regular season on Friday, Oct. 19, when the Tigers dominated visiting Champlain Valley, 35-7, to enter the Division I playoffs with a 5-3 record and the No. 5 seed.

All the D-I quarterfinals are set for this Friday at 7 p.m. The Tigers will play at No. 4 Rutland (5-3). The winner of that game will meet the winner of  No. 1 Hartford (8-0) and No. 8 South Burlington (4-4) the following weekend.

Moulton wins NVAC small schools XC title

SWANTON — Middlebury Union High School junior Max Moulton won the NVAC small schools boys’ cross-country title on Saturday at Missisquoi, and eight other runners from Mount Abraham, Vergennes and MUHS posted top-20 finishes to highlight local teams’ efforts.

Overall, the Tiger boys took third with 77 points behind Missisquoi (39) and Rice (74), followed by BFA-Fairfax (87), Milton (151), VUHS (160), Spaulding (172), Richford (179) and Mount Abe (233).

Tiger field hockey is out; OV, Eagles set

ADDISON COUNTY — Middlebury fell in its Division I first-round game Tuesday as the high school field hockey playoffs opened, while in D-II Mount Abraham and Otter Valley will take the field for Friday quarterfinals.

The No. 9 Tigers’ quest for a second-straight D-I crown ended with a 3-1 loss at No. 8 Mount Mansfield on Tuesday. Tiffany Danyow’s late first-half goal tied the game at 1-1, but the 6-7-2 Cougars scored twice in the second half for the victory. Goalie Baily Ryan was credited with 11 saves for the 1-12-1 Tigers.
