MIDDLEBURY — The Vergennes Union High School girls’ soccer team got a pair of early second-half goals from senior striker Ruby Dombek in a rain-soaked Monday game at Middlebury and held on for a 2-0 win.

Dombek and Tiger sophomore goalie Molly Campbell collided while Dombek poked the second ball home at 33:11, and both stretched out on the wet turf for 15 scary minutes while being treated.

I will readily admit to being grumpy when Jose Lobaton’s home run sailed over the fence in Tampa Bay’s miserable excuse for a baseball park on Monday night.

It would have been great to see the Boston Red Sox sweep the Rays and get plenty of rest before the American League Championship Series, or ALCS (an abbreviation that sounds uncomfortably like a disease).

But it wasn’t meant to be, and I just clicked off the TV before Lobaton lumbered all the way around the bases, and I went to bed.

Panton tax increase irks residents

Posted on October 3, 2013 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

PANTON — When Panton homeowners opened their tax bills late this summer, they found an unwelcome surprise: a school-tax hike of almost 18 cents.

That sharp increase — although it represented basically Panton’s first since 2009 — has sparked reaction by residents and town officials alike, including a Sept. 24 selectboard meeting that was better attended than Panton’s town meeting.
