Vergennes Opera House - Fall-Winter 07 233.jpg

VERGENNES — In 1993, a couple feet above the Vergennes city offices a mixture of fallen plaster and pigeon droppings blanketed the abandoned Vergennes Opera House floor.

New Friends of the Vergennes Opera House (FVOH) interim president Gerianne Smart, then a volunteer and later a longtime FVOH head, remembers well the days when hard labor mixed with a distant vision for the future of the city’s theater, now well more than 100 years old.

RUTLAND — Several members of this past spring’s successful baseball teams from Otter Valley and Vergennes union high schools played major roles as the North and South teams split an Aug. 10 doubleheader at Mount St. Joseph in the annual 2013 Vermont Baseball Coaches Association North-South Senior All-Star game.

VUHS hurler Charlie Stapleford was the winning pitcher as the North prevailed in the opener, 10-5, while OV’s Justin Owen threw three spotless innings to open the nightcap, a 5-0 victory for the South.

So, what is the most important part of the body for an athlete?

The torso, for core strength?

The hands, so vital in virtually every sport except soccer?

The legs, critical for mobility, balance and speed?

Well, no, the answer is pretty obvious: the brain.

Sure, without generous helpings of strength, hand-to-eye coordination, quickness, agility, balance or some combination of a majority of those traits, an athlete will not excel.

NEW HAVEN — With lightning providing a dramatic backdrop at Addison County Fair and Field Days on Thursday night, Ferrisburgh’s Andy Husk and what was left of his bright blue four-door sedan won the No. 1 Auto Parts Demo Derby feature after delivering one final blow to Chuck Havens’ bigger, but no longer mobile, black car.

Husk’s victory capped an evening in which the popular annual demo derby just dodged the thunderstorm, but was halted for about 20 minutes when Leicester’s Joe Kemp was injured in the evening’s second heat.

VERGENNES — Work should begin next week on a $600,000 project that Vergennes Union High School officials said is critical to the building’s integrity: New roofing and insulation on its classroom wing and auditorium.

After trimming the proposed work because bids came in higher than expected, a school board member said school directors were happy with the compromises, and he reminded district residents that further repairs are still needed on the building.
