Middlebury hopes to slow Route 7 traffic

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectmen on Tuesday agreed to seek a lower speed limit on Route 7 South between Middlebury village and East Middlebury, an action prompted at least in part by last week’s fatal accident at the intersection of the highway and Cady Cross Road.

Middlebury Development Review Board member Scott Foster came to the meeting to urge selectmen to petition the Agency of Transportation to lower the 50 mph limit between G. Stone Motors and Route 125.

Clippings: Bird museum has carved a niche

Posted on August 12, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

As many times as I’ve been there, close to a half-dozen, maybe, I’m still not sure how to find the Birds of Vermont Museum in Huntington.

What I can say to anyone with even a passing interest in birds, nature or carving is that it is worth picking up an atlas (old school) or going online (non-Luddite) and learning how to get to the remote, gravel-surfaced byway of Sherman Hollow Road, where the museum may be found.

Rotary centerpiece still hot topic

MIDDLEBURY — A small offshoot of the $16 million Cross Street Bridge project continued on Tuesday to take up a large part of Middlebury selectmen’s time — the question what to place in the 22-foot circle in the middle of the new roundabout that workers began to build this week at the bridge’s downtown end.

In late June, a committee appointed by selectmen recommended a prominent public work of art that should be 20 to 25 feet tall, lighted at night, and designed to be appreciated from a safe distance.

ADDISON — Along the way to choosing a career as an artist, Addison resident and 2010 college graduate T.J. Cunningham experienced two epiphanies.

One came five years ago, when Cunningham, then 17, worked at Addison’s Bridge Restaurant. Cunningham had always since the age of 4 or 5 spent time, in his own words, “drawing pictures and creating things and painting.”

Voters OK water plant upgrade

VERGENNES — Voters turned out in small numbers last Wednesday, but backed by a large margin a proposed $5.1 million upgrade of the Vergennes-Panton Water District plant, which was built in 1973 on Panton’s Adams Ferry Road.

The final tally recorded at the district’s Vergennes office on Canal Street was 104-49, or 67-33 percent. That vote cleared the way for the first major upgrade of the Lake Champlain plant since its construction.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Amateur Hockey Association is adopting a new approach this winter that MAHA officials hope will encourage more young skaters to pick up hockey sticks.

MAHA will create the Middlebury Hockey League (MHL), which will be based at the Memorial Sports Center and offer kids a chance to play in and practice for a full hockey schedule without the travel that the sport has typically demanded.

FERRISBURGH — After learning on Tuesday in a letter from interim Ferrisburgh zoning administrator Thomas Mansfield that he would leave at the end of 2010, selectmen decided to meet on Aug. 17 with Mansfield and the heads of the town’s planning and zoning boards to discuss the position’s job description and hours.

Mansfield, who works half-time in Charlotte, agreed to step in and work just four hours a week plus meeting time in Ferrisburgh.

Ferrisburgh looks at real estate deals

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh selectmen on Tuesday took steps to open public discussion about the town’s possible purchase of one property and — in a move they say is related — to list for sale a town-owned 9.37-acre parcel next to the Agency of Transportation’s Route 22A commuter lot.

The potential purchase — subject to voter approval in November — is of a home and 2.01 acres next to the town office building on Route 7. The land lies south and west of the Grange Hall lot and also abuts Ferrisburgh Central School.
