WALTHAM — A Waltham affordable housing project about a decade in the making is now expected to be ready for occupancy later this year, according to Addison County Community Trust Executive Director Elise Shanbacker.

The McKnight Lane Affordable Housing Development, on the Vergennes border on the west side of South Maple Street, will offer seven modular duplexes on the 2.3-acre site that once housed the Gevry Trailer Park.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council on Tuesday voted, 4-3, to extend its South Maple Street sidewalk southward to the city line and beyond to a Waltham 14-unit affordable housing project proposed by the Addison County Community Trust (ACCT).

Extending the sidewalk a total of 492 feet, including about 120 feet into Waltham, would also serve a half-dozen city homes south of Thomas Circle, where the sidewalk now ends on the east side of South Maple Street.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team on Monday shook off cobwebs from spring break, a 17-day layoff from their last game, and a rally by visiting Burr & Burton to improve to 3-0 with a 13-8 victory.

The Tigers bolted to a 5-1 lead in the first 12 minutes, but early in the second half the Bulldogs cut the lead to 7-6 and had a free-position shot lined up.

Andy Kirkaldy: Brady should keep fighting NFL in court

For the record, I believe New England Patriots employees at the January 2015 AFC championship game deflated footballs to the lowest legal limit of 11.5 pounds per square inch preferred by quarterback Tom Brady. Cold weather did the rest, as has been proven by everybody from Lynn, Mass., 7th-graders to Washington, D.C., think-tankers.

That act led us to the saga of Deflategate, the latest chapter of which was written on Monday, when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit reinstated Brady’s suspension.

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday approved a $40,000 deal with the firms proposing the Vermont Green Line that calls for those companies to pay for the town’s costs of legal and expert review of the underground power line that will run along town roads on its way to Route 7 and New Haven.

The developers of the $650 million, 400-megawatt VGL, Massachusetts companies Anbaric Transmission and National Grid, will place $40,000 in an escrow account.

VERGENNES — It was just a routine call to Vergennes police on a Monday morning, in this case Nov. 30, 2015, made by an employee of the Monkton Road branch of Merchants Bank — there were suspicious people outside the bank in a car.

But because that call was made and because police followed up, 10 days later U.S. marshals arrested a New Jersey man, Arun Aftab, 33, on a federal felony weapons charge.

Eagles tally a very big win over Knights

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School sophomore softball pitcher Audrey Shahan might never enjoy an easier pitching win in her career.

Certainly Shahan did her part on Thursday vs. visiting Rice, allowing four hits and just one first-inning unearned run while striking out six Green Knights in her five-inning stint.

But Shahan hardly needed to be that sharp. The Eagles used 23 hits (including three homers), 12 walks, 11 stolen bases, eight wild pitches and nine Rice errors to win, 32-1, and improve to 2-0 with the five-inning victory.

ADDISON — The Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area is best known for the annual visit of thousands of snow and Canada geese to its farm fields and wetlands. But Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department officials say — and many year-round visitors already know — there is much more to the 2,858-acre site that includes land in Panton and Bridport as well as Addison.

Pump fix could curb city sewer overflows

Posted on April 18, 2016 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — A fairly simple fix to one of the two pumps at the Macdonough Drive pump station could help Vergennes solve at least some of the chronic overflow problem that has plagued its municipal sewer system, City Manager Mel Hawley told the city council at its Tuesday meeting.

Hawley said sewer workers have discovered that modern products advertised as flushable don’t always dissolve properly in the system, and those items — he called them “rags” at the meeting — tend to clog the pumps.
