VERGENNES — For the third time since 2005, residents of the five communities that make up Addison Northwest Supervisory Union will decide on March 1 if one board, not the current five, should run their four schools.

A yes vote on March 1 (Town Meeting Day) in all five towns would create the Addison Northwest Unified School District and a 12-member board to operate it, effective July 1, 2017, after a year of planning during which the existing ANwSU boards would still call the shots.

VERGENNES — Vermont Gas Systems intends to bring natural gas service to all Vergennes through its new Addison County pipeline by the end of 2016, company representatives told the city council last week.

Vermont Gas Vice President for Communications and Government Ned Farquhar told the council on Feb. 9 the company expects to have a contractor signed on by March 1 and to begin work to install pipes to carry gas throughout Vergennes in mid-to-late April or early May.

VERGENNES — Towns’ ownership of their schools and surrounding land has concerned residents each time Addison Northwest Supervisory Union has voted on unification, most recently in 2010, and the upcoming decision on March 1 is no exception.

In the past decade, a central question in some residents’ minds has been reluctance to allow control and ownership of their schools to be transferred to a single board with representatives from all five ANwSU towns, as will be the case in ANwSU if its member towns vote yes next month.

Vergennes dealing with three issues

Posted on February 15, 2016 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — In Vergennes, City Manager Mel Hawley said officials want to tie up three loose ends before school property is transferred to a new unified union under one-board control, something that would happen on July 1, 2017, if Addison Northwest Supervisory Union unification passes on March 1.

One loose end Hawley recently uncovered while researching deeds. The city’s Green Street fire station was once the Vergennes High School gym, and the city bought it for that purpose from the former Vergennes ID School District per a 1957 citywide vote.

Ferrisburgh considers recreation area

FERRISBURH — In Ferrisburgh, a key issue as the March 1 Addison Northwest Supervisory Union unification vote approaches is the ongoing use of the school property by community recreation programs.

Those include youth soccer, baseball and softball teams, and the addition in recent years of a skating rink used by students and residents alike, to which the town’s recreation committee plans to add a concrete pad with basketball hoops and a roof.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council on Feb. 9 heard from Mike Winslow, the chairman of the city’s Otter Creek Basin Task Force, about its volunteer efforts to maintain Falls Park, which is on the west bank of the river.

Winslow sought a long-term commitment from the council to fund maintenance of the park, which he called a top task force priority.

“We identified Falls Park as the place we wanted to invest our energy,” Winslow said.

VERGENNES — When asked, Middlebury Union High School senior Ryan Miller said he had hit plenty of buzzer-beating, game-winning shots before Friday night in the Vergennes gym, when his three-pointer with four seconds to go lifted the Tigers to a 38-37 victory over the Commodores.

But Miller said those all came in his imagination.

“Maybe in the driveway at home counting down the clock, but in a game situation that was the first time,” he said.

MIDDLEBURY — The first time the Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team played BFA-St. Albans this season, the Tigers allowed 25 shots and six goals in a road loss.

That was on Dec. 16. On Saturday, the Tigers put the clamps on the Comets, allowing just seven shots in a 4-2 victory that appears to have clinched second place in Division I for MUHS, which improved to 13-3-2 with the win vs. third-place BFA (10-8-1, with four losses outside Vermont).
