Clippings: Family newcomer can be gnaw-ty

VERGENNES — Not only did the Vergennes Union High School boys’ basketball team make history on Saturday afternoon when the Commodores completed their 24-0 season and won the Division II title.

So did their coach, Peter Quinn.

According to veteran Rutland Herald sports writer Tom Haley, only one other coach has won state basketball titles with both girls’ and boys’ teams, Chris Hughes of Proctor High School.

Quinn, of course, coached the Commodore girls to back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006.

JAY PEAK — Despite a 34-10 advantage in shots on goal in Saturday’s Division II semifinal, the No. 6 Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team came up short at No. 2 North Country, 3-2.

The Tigers finished at 13-9, including an overtime playoff win at No. 3 Rutland and a win at No. 1 Harwood in their regular season finale that showed they were a threat for the D-II title.

Coach Tim Howlett said the team also played well on Saturday, but ran into some bad luck and a hot goaltender, the 16-5 Falcons Mikaella Doran.

VERGENNES — Vergennes residents on Tuesday dealt the $1.85 million proposal for a new North Main Street police station a narrow defeat, 302-292, a result that left city officials up in the air about their next step.

Mayor-elect Bill Benton said aldermen would take up the issue at their next meeting, probably March 26. He does think most residents believe the city’s police force needs to move out of its tiny City Hall headquarters.
