MIDDLEBURY — Round Two went to the Rebels.

In a Division I clash on Friday on Fucile Field, the South Burlington High School girls’ lacrosse team avenged its only loss of the season and dealt Middlebury its only setback, 13-10.

The 8-1 Rebels took over first place from the 7-1 Tigers after outscoring MUHS in the second half, 5-2, to snap a halftime tie.

Coach Kelley Higgins, whose team had defeated the Rebels in overtime in South Burlington, 8-7, was disappointed, but philosophical, afterward.

VERGENNES — The Vermont Principals’ Association announced last week that Vergennes Union High School Co-Principal Ed Webbley has been chosen as the organization’s Robert F. Pierce Vermont Secondary Principal of the Year.

Webbley becomes the second VUHS principal in the past decade to earn that honor: The VPA presented former VUHS school head Peter Coffey with the same award in 2002.

VPA Executive Director Ken Page noted not only that repeat recognition, but also that:

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union High School junior third baseman Kate Mulliss had a first inning to forget in Tuesday’s home softball game vs. Mount Abraham, but a seventh inning to remember.

Mulliss made three first-inning errors that helped the Eagles to five runs. But she capped a three-hit day by drilling a line drive homer over the left-field fence in the seventh to snap a tie and give the Commodores an 11-9 win over their local rivals.

Afterward, Mulliss recalled the first inning.

Unification debated at Vergennes forum

VERGENNES — At Tuesday’s Vergennes forum in advance of the May 17 revote on Addison Northwest Supervisory Union unification, opponents questioned what tax impact the switch to one-board governance would have on city residents.

Meanwhile, backers focused on unification’s potential benefits to ANwSU students, especially those from elementary schools coming into Vergennes Union High School, and to residents from long-range stability of tax rates.

On the Ball: Panthers dancing

First up, this just in (and no surprise, really): I was wrong. And happy to say so.

When the Middlebury women’s lacrosse team lost to Tufts in the NESCAC quarterfinals, 13-12, a week ago Sunday, I assumed and wrote the 11-5 Panthers’ season was over. But their strength of schedule — all five of their losses came to teams ranked in the top 17, and Middlebury has five top-19 wins — earned Coach Missy Foote’s Panthers a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.

BRISTOL — It hasn’t been a typical spring for Mount Abraham Union High School baseball, which has won five Division II championships since 2001, including the 2010 title in dramatic, extra-inning fashion.

On Friday and Saturday, the Eagles dropped two home games, 7-5 to Colchester and 6-2 to Rice, respectively, and their record fell to 1-5.

MIDDLEBURY — Although the Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team perennially contends for the Division I title and reached the final a year ago, the Tigers entered this year with questions to answer.

A new coach, Kelley Higgins, brought an extensive experience guiding field hockey teams, including the successful Tiger program, but a more limited background in lacrosse. And seven starters are gone from the 2010 finalists, including the entire starting defense and attack.

Well, so far, so good.

ADDISON COUNTY — Ultimately, Vermont snowfall in the winter of 2010-2011 did not set a record, according to data at the Burlington office of the National Weather Service.

This year’s snowfall total in Burlington — figures aren’t kept for Addison County — stood at 128.4 inches as of Tuesday, in third place behind the Nos. 1 and 2 winters in recorded history, the 145.4 inches that fell in 1970-71 and the 132 inches that blanketed Burlington in 1886-87.

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ lacrosse team took control of Saturday’s game against visiting Vergennes with defense, allowing the Commodores only two shots on goal and taking a 7-1 halftime lead on the way to a 13-5 win.

Eagle Coach Tim McGowan’s second-year varsity program evened its record at 3-3, while the Commodores — who have been plagued by postponements and rain-soaked home turf — fell to 0-2.
