Editorial: A practical call by Shumlin

Posted on June 15, 2015 |
By Angelo Lynn

In the week after Gov. Peter Shumlin’s surprise announcement that he would not seek a fourth term for governor, you could characterize the reactions in two camps: those who thought he made the decision because he didn’t want to lose what would be a tough contest, and those who were surprised he didn’t fight for a fourth term to cement his legacy on several key issues.

Voters send message, schools respond with difficult choices

Posted on June 3, 2015 |
By Angelo Lynn

Back on March 3, voters in Bristol and Vergennes sent clear messages to their respective union high school school boards to reduce school spending further than the budgets proposed at Town Meeting. Boards trimmed a little, but in subsequent votes in April, voters again rejected the Mount Abraham Union High School, as well as the VUHS budget. After further reductions in both budgets, voters go to the polls next week for a decisive third vote.

Recent state budgets have been paying costs forward

When Governor Shumlin signed the $616 million transportation bill last week, he punctuated a hallmark of his administration: continued long-term investment in the state’s infrastructure that will lay the foundation for a better economy long after he has left office. The same could be said of gains made in early childhood education, cleaning up Vermont’s waterways and Lake Champlain, investing in renewable energy programs, aggressively addressing the state’s drug crisis and on and on.

The transportation bill is a case in point.

Clippings: It's a horse race, and it's ours to win

It’s Middlebury, Vt., vs. Bar Harbor, Maine, and it’s neck and neck.

The race is all about the sense of place and the stakes, as is usually the case in competition, is about … well, let’s just put it out there — it’s about pride and ego, and a bit of self-serving capitalism. OK, so we’re not out to save the world today. We’re not even appealing to our better selves. Rather, we’d just like to win.

Still, the satisfaction would be sweet and the stakes, while small, are suddenly worthwhile.

Editorial: Legislature wraps up with impressive scorecard

Posted on May 18, 2015 |
By Angelo Lynn

It wasn’t pretty, but at the end of the day, this Legislature and the Shumlin administration passed a couple major pieces of legislation, and overcame several significant budget hurdles in crafting a reasonable budget in tough times.

The major legislation focused on cleaning up the state’s waterways (particularly Lake Champlain) and passing a major reform of school governance and cost containment. Both pieces of legislation were introduced early in the session, were thoroughly discussed and rehashed over and over, before being passed by large majorities.

Editorial: Down the rabbit hole: Kennedy portrays extreme views of vaccine opponents

Posted on May 7, 2015 |
By Angelo Lynn

Robert Kennedy Jr. continued his nationwide anti-vaccine tour with a stopover in Vermont this Tuesday, spreading his campaign of misinformation and misguided claims that the Centers for Disease Control was corrupt and in the hip pocket of “big pharma.” A Vermont-based anti-vaccine group sponsored Kennedy’s visit to Montpelier, paying for his flight and expenses in a last-minute effort to dissuade the Legislature from cutting out the philosophical exemption that currently allows parents to avoid school-mandated vaccinations when children enter kindergarten.

Records, fun mark 7th Maple Run

MapleRun4253.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Two course records were set at the seventh annual Middlebury Maple Run this past Sunday as the 700-plus runners complete the 13.1-mile course under sunny skies, a brisk south wind, and temperatures that started in the mid-50s and rose to the mid-70s by midday. While the temperatures were ideal, the brisk headwinds from the south presented some challenge to runners along the exposed Sheep Farm Road in Weybridge and along South Street for miles 9 through 11, before being a tailwind for the last two-miles of the race.
