Editorial: Is H.833 a step toward reform?

Posted on April 2, 2014 |
By Angelo Lynn

This year the Legislature has successfully crafted a viable bill, H.883, that focuses the public’s attention on education reform. That’s no easy task, and it’s to the credit of the House Education Committee under the leadership of Rep. Johannah Donovan, D-Burlington. That committee, along with its Senate counterpart, has been studying ways to bend the curve on education spending for the past several years, and, as importantly, craft a system that uses the money spent educating Vermont students more effectively.

Editorial: Shumlin's bold vision shadows a weakness amid lofty goals

Posted on March 26, 2014 |
By Angelo Lynn

Gov. Peter Shumlin’s strength, as witnessed by his Monday visit to Middlebury to speak at a legislative luncheon, is the mile-high clarity through which he sees political challenges.

A corresponding weakness is that he too quickly dismisses the swamps that lie in the weeds of detail between his lofty goals. It’s a trait that transcends issues, from the natural gas pipeline, to health care reform and school governance.

As with any controversial issue, facts are a casualty of passionate debate. That’s frequently been the case with the discussion over the proposed bond for a new municipal building in Middlebury.

Let’s clarify a few points that we’ve seen distorted in the past few weeks:

Raise your hand if you’ve been to a professional convention, trade show, or other event held to honor winners, provide training, and help you network with colleagues in the greater region.

We go every February to the stately Boston Park Plaza for the New England Newspaper and Press Association convention, attend seminars over two days, have at least one good dinner out on the town, celebrate well-deserved awards, and then head back for a Sunday at home. It’s fun, engaging and we all learn more than we ever expect.

Clippings: The editor's role — tempering the tempest?

Posted on November 7, 2013 | Blog Category:
By Angelo Lynn

If you’re thinking of getting into a written squabble, Mark Twain once wrote, “never pick a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel.”

It’s a joke most aptly applied to the days of yore when newspapers, run by mavericks like William Randolph Hearst and others in the peak of Yellow Journalism (1895-8), were, let’s say, sometimes less than ethical.

Editorial: 725,000 reasons to give

Posted on November 4, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

“Together we can make a difference.” That’s one phrase many area residents associate with the United Way of Addison County.

“The Way Addison County cares” is another.

Both are apt reminders of the way the United Way works: It relies on a large group of volunteers to reach out and help people in need. It works with more than two-dozen agencies in Addison County to be sure the human and social needs of people in the county don’t go unmet.

Good news came last Thursday in the form of a $8.9 million grant to rebuild 20 miles of state-owned Vermont Railway track between Leicester and Rutland. It’s part of the $18.5 million project that will refurbish the tracks between Burlington and Rutland and allow the trains to move at higher speeds. Editorial: Creating a town jewel in Middlebury

Posted on September 5, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

One of the legitimate uses of town tax dollars is the creation of public space in the form of parks, town recreation areas and perservation of historic areas or structures that would otherwise fall into decay. To that end, a worthy deal is in the making through which the Middlebury Area Land Trust would deed to the town the historic powerhouse at the north end of the Otter Creek falls in downtown Middlebury.
