At Middlebury’s Town Meeting, the one surprise came in the spur-of-the-moment discussion over the economic viability of the town’s newly hired business development director. In what started out as an introduction of the new director, Jamie Goucher, the conversation quickly turned to how the director’s performance would be measured and how committed the stakeholders were to funding the position over the first five years and thereafter. The concern was that taxpayers would be funding the position after the year 2017.

In Bristol, there is enough public dissention over the location of a proposed new fire station to warrant further review. To do that, town residents would reject the current proposal they’ll face on Town Meeting Day and look forward to fine-tuning the proposal — or considering another — later in the year.

Editorial: With search and rescue, it’s time to junk the jalopy

Here’s the nut of what is happening with the proposed changes in the Search and Rescue bill, H.182, being discussed in the Vermont House Governmental Operations committee: The Vermont State Police botched a search mission for 19-year-old Levi Duclos a year ago January, and a summer study committee decided the wise thing to do was give the State Police even more money and power to keep control of search and rescue operations.

This Presidents’ Day we walked the three flights of marble steps to the Lincoln Memorial. Warm hues of the setting sun glowed on the towering Washington Monument from the feet of Lincoln, captured as a mirror image in the reflecting pool, in a setting where throngs of visitors each day peer across the two-mile expanse to the Capitol building.
