Ilsley Library's gardens have a special keeper

Anna Benson 1.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Anna Rose Benson has been meticulously tending to the gardens around the Ilsley Public Library in downtown Middlebury since the early 2000s.

Her love for the gardens is contagious; she radiates joy each minute she spends planning the space, digging the soil and encouraging each bud and blossom with her care.

“Do you know the book ‘Corduroy’ about the bear?” Benson asked. In the book a teddy bear named Corduroy waits on the shelf in a department store for someone to come and take him home.

Pets in the workplace Boomer and Ladybug.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Animal lovers will often describe time spent around their beloved pets as therapeutic, calming, uplifting and stress-relieving.

For folks that leave their pets at home during the workday, there’s often a sense of hurry when leaving the office so as to give a friendly hello to that familiar face that’s waiting to greet one at the door.

Increasingly, however, workplaces are opening their doors and their policies to pets at work and are seeing some positive results.

Elisabeth: Roch's sweet ride

Roch with Elisabeth_039.jpg

Chuck Miller wrote about it in his 1956 song “bright red convertible”.

Prince wrote about it in “little red corvette” in 1986.

There’s just something alluring about a little red car that few can deny. It always catches the eye and makes both women and men swoon.

One such local beauty belongs to Rock MacIntyre of MacIntyre Fuels in Middlebury. “Her name is Elisabeth — or Betty,”MacIntyre says, “with the top down.”

BRIDPORT — Sometimes the best ideas come just before a breakdown.

You’re at the end of your rope and you’re either going to break down or break through.

Nancy Sunderland is one of the fortunate who broke through.

Sunderland, 37, is a native Vermonter who grew up in Essex Junction to French Canadian parents who had emigrated from Quebec.

Toward the end of high school, Sunderland reviewed her options and made a decision that surprised several people around her: She enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Platform tennis: Dark, cold and a whole lot of fun

Posted on February 2, 2015 |
By Christy Lynn

Paddleball3637.jpg

Platform tennis is an unusual sport because it seems that those who have been exposed to it quickly become obsessed; everyone else has never heard of it.

The rules of the game are much like doubles tennis and the court looks very similar, albeit about a third the size of a tennis court and built on a platform (hence the name) with 12-foot-tall walls that come up on all sides made out of chicken wire fencing that is held in high tension so that players can hit the ball as it bounces off the wire (similar to racquetball or squash).

Christy Lynn: in praise of cold weather

Posted on February 2, 2015 |

Christy.jpg

I love cold weather. Maybe it’s because I was born in January, or maybe it’s the part of me that kind of likes it when things are a little hard, but either way, it makes me feel alive.

I admit that there are times when it’s hard to leave a cozy perch with a blanket on the couch in pursuit of a venture outside when temperatures are in the single digits and the wind is whipping through the trees.

Enter Trudy, my energetic border collie, who provides the nudge to get me in motion on even the coldest days.

It’s the middle of August and that time of year when you wake up in the morning and there’s a chill in the air that reminds you autumn is on the way.

It’s also that time of year when you start looking at your kids’ tattered, stained clothes and worn-out shoes and start thinking about what they may need to start another school year.

Imagine this: A child who is eager to explore, learn and grow is signed up for a program where every month he or she receives a package in the mail from a nice lady in Nashville containing a brand new book.

For free.

Impossible? Not quite.

Imagination Library is the name of this very charity that country music legend Dolly Parton established back in 1996 to help foster a love for reading among young children in East Tennessee.

Painter Deborah Holmes returns with watercolor creations

By Christy Lynn

Deborah Holmes_1546.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — The distinguished watercolor painter Deborah Holmes is planning a return to Addison County this summer, after a five-year relocation to Greensboro, in the Northeast Kingdom.

The move north was inspired by a longing to produce a collection of work documenting family farms in Vermont. Holmes, who lived in Weybridge for more than two decades before moving to Orleans County, worked on more than 60 paintings of 12 farms in the Northeast Kingdom, inspired by the buildings, animals and pastoral landscapes.
