Guest Editorial: The pain pill

Posted on November 21, 2012 |

Prescription drug abuse is a problem with numerous casualties and it is a reality that we know only too well in St. Albans. The abuse has torn families apart, led to increases in local crime, and put many peoples’ health at risk.

Guest editorial: Gov. Shumlin faces key decision on education

Posted on November 19, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn

To Mr. Shumlin:

If we could add 25 million post-secondary educated students to the workforce by 2025, the boost to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product would be $500 billion annually, according to a Georgetown University study.

If you do the math, Vermont’s tiny sliver of that increase would be roughly a billion dollars annually and that billion dollars translates directly to the economic and cultural security we need to pursue for the next generation of Vermonters.

Guest Editorial: Study ranks Vt. as a stingy place. Are we really?

Posted on September 3, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn

Vermonters give an average of 2.8 percent of their discretionary income to charity, making us one of the stingiest states in the union, according to a national study conducted by the Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Our cellar-dwelling neighbors are close by. New Hampshire is the stingiest at 2.5 percent, and the rest of New England fills in the bottom six positions nationally.

Guest Editorial: What did Adam Smith really say?

Posted on July 26, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn

As the campaign season begins to hit high tide, one of the more common motifs from conservatives is the lament that government inhibits growth and prosperity and that a truly “free market” would unleash the powers of the marketplace — the result being a society bathed in opulence.

Guest Editorial: The coming wave

Posted on July 12, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn

If you had two products of comparable quality and one cost $120,000 and the other $20,000, the choice between the two would be simple. If the $20,000 option were considerably better, then not only would the choice be easy, but the $120,000 option would cease to exist.

To a degree, that describes the horns of the dilemma to be encountered by higher education. No matter how they respond, the cost of a college education and the explosion in digital learning models will revamp the way the next generation approaches education.

Guest Editorial: Negative advertising takes center stage

Posted on July 9, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn

Democratic consultant Jason Stanford argues in a Huffington Post article that negative advertising is a good thing, if you like democracy. He argues that voters pay more attention to criticism than praise and that raising the voters’ hackles also gets them to the polls.

We would like to believe otherwise, but the research shows he’s correct. To drive the point home, he points to the recent Wisconsin election, which was highly negative, and yet drove more people to the polls than in the general election.

Guest editorial: Court's decision sound, potus onus on voting public, for the fourth

Posted on July 5, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn

For months, the chattering class occupied itself with the self-appointed task of telling people how the court would rule on “Obamacare” and why. And they were wrong. Almost without exception. No one predicted that Chief Justice John Roberts — nominated by former President George Bush — would side with the court’s four liberal justices to give President Barack Obama his most sought-after victory.

Guest Editorial: Obesity is taking its toll

Posted on May 7, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn

In 1986 it was estimated that the cost of obesity in the United States amounted to about 5 percent of total health care spending. Today, that figure has more than tripled to 15 percent, meaning it costs us $350 billion a year to treat.

That’s bad enough. Worse is the prospect that the costs will continue to escalate and that Type 2 diabetes is becoming prevalent among children and teens.

Guest Editorial: Sugar tax should be part of health reform

Posted on March 19, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn

George Till represents the town of Jericho. He is a Democrat by choice and a doctor by trade. Presumably, he thought his professional background would be an asset as the Legislature dealt with health care reform and its many variants.

He is experiencing, first-hand, the frustration that results from a commonsense objective being thwarted by the politics of money and the difficulty of individuals assuming responsibility for their own health.

Guest Editorial: The bigger picture

Posted on February 20, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn

When Central Vermont Public Service was granted an emergency rate increase in 2001, the deal struck was that the utility would repay the difference to ratepayers when, and if, the utility was sold. The amount was an estimated $21 million.

CVPS is I the process of being acquired by Gaz Metro, the Quebec Company that owns Green Mountain Power and Vermont Gas. It took a nanosecond before the question of the $21 million took center stage.
