Greg Dennis: Trump and the climate change narative

Posted on December 1, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

Liberals everywhere are gnashing their teeth over what will happen under President Donald Trump and the GOP Congress.

Will Trump abolish Obamacare and deprive 22 million Americans of the healthcare coverage they just got? Will he cancel the Iran deal and move the world closer to nuclear war? Will he really try to deport 11 million immigrants, slash the Medicaid safety net, and penalize women who get an abortion?

Gregory Dennis: Minter, Scott and old vs. new Vermont

Posted on November 4, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

Take a close look at the governor’s race this year. You’re looking at two different Vermonts.

Old Vermont is Republican Phil Scott, the current lieutenant governor. He’s a state native, longtime legislator, owner of a construction company and the winningest ever race car driver at Thunder Road International SpeedBowl.

New Vermont is Democrat Sue Minter, from “away” but  a longtime state resident who got her first Vermont job with the Conservation Law Foundation, was a legislator and later ran VTrans.

Gregory Dennis: What men do – and don't-– say in locker rooms

Posted on October 20, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

So what exactly do men talk about in locker rooms?

Donald Trump was caught on tape admitting to the now-unemployed Billy Bush that he forcibly kissed women without warning and grabbed them by the genitals.

“When you’re a star, they let you do it,” he bragged.

But as we now know from at least 15 women who say they were inappropriately groped by Trump, they don’t in fact let you do it. They protect their dignity and get the hell out of there.

Gregory Dennis: Dems still shortchanging the Progs

Posted on October 6, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

Does the Vermont Democratic Party still hate the Vermont Progressive Party?

It appears so, judging by the way it’s holding a stale grudge against candidates who call themselves progressive and run for office as both Democrats and Progressives.

Dave Zuckerman, a Hinesburg organic farmer, ran for lieutenant governor this year as both a D and a P. But the state Democratic apparatus has consistently — even now — withheld its proprietary voter information from his campaign.

Gregory Dennis: I'm seeking paradise on Nantucket Island

Posted on September 22, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

I’ve been on Nantucket for the past few days, revisiting a place I’d spent the past 40 years idealizing as an island paradise. Forty years, that is, since I last visited this 14-mile-long sandbar off the Massachusetts coast.

I thought it was paradise. But now I’m not sure.

Paradise Lost is a theme as old as the Book of Genesis. We lose a little bit of paradise when we emerge from our mother’s womb. Perhaps it’s inevitable that this drama, the sense of something gone, will be played out in ways large and small throughout our lives.

Gregory Dennis: Columnist works in an over-computerized world

Posted on September 8, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

I have five computers.

It took three of those computers just to write this column.

Something has gone terribly wrong.

It used to be that a columnist could pound out a thousand words on a manual Smith Corona typewriter and be done with it.

To be sure, there was plenty of cutting and pasting involved in that process. (And for those of you who don’t know Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings, I do mean actual cutting and pasting of little scraps of paper with words on them.)

Gregory Dennis: PSB stifling input on pipeline project

Posted on August 25, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

News and Notes:

If there was ever any doubt how publicly disoriented the state’s Department of Public Service really is when it comes to the fracked gas pipeline now making its way through the county — well, department Commissioner Chris Recchia put that doubt to rest a few days ago.

Not long after the Public Service Board tried to ban the public from a public hearing on the pipeline, Recchia made it clear that the department is sick of hearing from members of the public who oppose the pipeline.

Gregory Dennis: Pot, politics and the hipster quotient

Posted on August 11, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

Notes from a dry sunny summer. Pot first, then politics…

I’ve met my hipster quotient this summer by visiting the Portlands of Oregon and Maine. While Portland, Maine, has what must be the world’s business Whole Foods and a high ratio of tattoos to humans; the tattoo-per-human ratio is even higher in Portland, Ore.

And of course the Left Coast version has something that Portland, Maine, can only dream about for now: legal marijuana.

Gregory Dennis: Recent acts part of tragic history

Posted on July 14, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

What can a white man, in the nation’s second-whitest state, say about the tragedies of violence and racism that continue to tear our country apart?

I sat down to write this column in Carol’s Hungry Mind Cafe, where the flow of coffee and friends on laptops can stir the creative juices.

But I had to go home to finish this. Because I didn’t want to have to explain to everyone in the cafe why I was crying.

Crying for all the decades of murdered black victims of white police violence — people who died because they were black.

Gregorgy Dennis: Advice for newlyweds

Posted on June 30, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

There once was a time in life when everyone was getting married. Then there were a few, inevitable divorces.

Now it’s time for everyone’s kids to get married.

This year for me is full of those weddings — the 20- and 30-somethings launching into full adulthood by tying the knot. Two weddings of that kind this month alone — one in Mt. Hood, Ore., and the other last weekend in the Berkshires. Another one coming up this fall.
