Between the Lines: Fallen bridge connects climate dots

Of all the destruction wrought in Vermont by Tropical Storm Irene, the most widely seen was the collapse of the covered bridge in Bartonsville.

The bridge’s destruction by the rain-swollen Williams River made The New York Times. A handheld video, shot as the bridge sank into the river, was shown on “The Today Show.” New Yorker writer John Seabrook chimed in with “Requiem for a Covered Bridge.”

TWO MEMBERS OF the Salisbury Fire Department were joined by around 50 other area firefighters in battling a March 21 grass fire off Route 125 in Cornwall. Firefighters from Cornwall, New Haven, Middlebury, Salisbury and Addison successfully extinguished the blaze before it could progress toward homes located nearby. No one was hurt and no homes were affected by the fire, said Cornwall Fire Chief Dennis Rheaume. Photo by Gregory Dennis

Between the Lines: Weighing coal weighers and consolidation

There are about 626,000 Vermonters — a number smaller than the population of Memphis, Tenn. Compared to the single government of that medium-sized city, Vermont has 237 towns, nine cities, five unincorporated areas and four gores.

“We confront the 21st-century challenges of delivering good government with a 19th-century governance structure,” says Bruce Hiland, who chairs the Cornwall selectboard. He featured the contrast between Vermont and Memphis governance in his remarks at the recent Cornwall town meeting.

Between the Lines: Powderhound considers taking up golf

Posted on January 5, 2012 |
By Gregory Dennis

Driving home this past Monday, I saw a scene befitting this winter season.

I’d like to report that it was a cross-country skier. What I saw, though, was not a skier but a golfer — hitting practice balls off one of the tees at the college golf course.

That’s all you need to know about what kind of winter it’s been for skiers and snowboarders.

Those of us who look forward to winter have grown accustomed to mild Novembers and Decembers. But it’s been many years since we’ve seen such a slow start to the ski season.

Between the Lines: Have yourself a merry 'Christmukah'

This year’s Christmas column comes in three parts: A Scrooge-like rant; an interlude in which the author repents of his Ebenezerish qualities; and an uplifting conclusion of peace, love and joy.

First, the rant.

Of all the aggravating little pieces of political correctness to which we have been subjected over the years, “Happy Holidays” is the worst.

They’re the worst I’ve ever had

Between the Lines: Making northern neighbors feel bienvenue

The Burlington City Council, which as one member notes “normally can’t decide on which side the sun will rise,” has unanimously decided to make it official: People from Quebec are welcome in Vermont.

It hardly seems that the Quebecois need encouragement, judging by the number of Quebec plates in the parking garage of the Burlington airport.

Between the Lines: A roundabout look at the summer

Summer ephemera:

The most remarkable thing about the new Middlebury roundabout that links Main Street, College Street and the Cross Street bridge is how unremarkable it has turned out to be.

After years of planning and debating and figuring out how to pay for the roundabout and bridge, the new traffic alignment has proved to work well — so well in fact that it’s quickly gone from being a novelty to an everyday feature of driving life.

Between the Lines: Area swimming holes offer gallons of fun

It’s summertime, and all I want to do is go swimming.

Say what you will about this year’s tough weather — a long winter followed by six weeks of bring-out-the-ark rain followed by drought — but it’s been a great summer for soaking one’s head.

It doesn’t get much better for lake lovers than Button Bay, Kingsland Bay and the Branbury Beach on Lake Dunmore. And for those who like to earn their swim, there’s always the hike up to Silver Lake.

Between the Lines: What he did on his summer vacation

Paris is a famous city in France. It is famous for its old churches, chic shops, cafes and museums, and world-class piles of pigeon droppings.

While there are now very few actual Parisians who live in the city — the entire metropolis having been overrun by tourists — those who remain are no longer as irredeemably arrogant as they once were.
