Weybridge 6th-grader proves a real quiz-whiz in geography

WEYBRIDGE — David Liebowitz is only 11, but he’s traveled to more places than a lot of people will see in their lifetimes. And the Weybridge Elementary School sixth-grader has the uncanny ability to remember where he’s been and what he’s seen — even in the pages of books and magazines.

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Repertory Theater (ART) will hold a gala and masquerade ball at the Vergennes Opera House at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, to mark two decades of minting new actors and theater technicians and to raise money to replenish a scholarship fund honoring one of the program’s beloved founders, Candace Burkle.

Middlebury plans survey on proposed change in town budet vote

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard wants to get community feedback before deciding whether to have a referendum on deciding future municipal budgets by Australian ballot.

It was a few weeks ago that former Selectman Craig Bingham asked the selectboard to consider a switch to Australian ballot for deciding the town budget. That spending plan has historically been decided from the floor at the annual gathering on the first Monday in March. That meeting draws an average of around 200 people out of Middlebury’s total checklist of 4,671 registered voters.

1935 murder victims buried; mystery persists

EAST MIDDLEBURY — It was a brisk day last fall when Walt Ducharme stood at the side of a freshly dug grave at the Prospect Cemetery in East Middlebury. The mortal remains of three people were at last given a final resting place after reposing in nondescript boxes in an office cabinet for 80 years.

But with eternal rest does not always come closure.

Senate considers new solar siting rules

MONTPELIER — The Senate Natural Resources & Energy Committee has passed out a bill that would among other things set up minimum setback requirements for solar energy projects and require the Vermont Public Service Board to ensure the projects comply with screening requirements that would be established by host communities.

After 44 years, Seubert ready to move on

MIDDLEBURY — Longtime English teacher Richard “Doc” Seubert has become part of the commencement tradition at Middlebury Union High School, assisting with graduation rehearsal and Project Graduation.

Next month, he’ll be among those passing on to the next phase of life.

“I’m finally going to be able to graduate,” Seubert said with a broad smile. “And the beat will go on.”

He has certainly earned it, after 44 years as an MUHS educator.
