UD-3 board agrees on school budget with 2.7% spending increase

MIDDLEBURY — UD-3 school directors are poised to approve a draft 2013-2014 budget for Middlebury Union middle and high schools that reflects a 2.71-percent increase in spending, but officials don’t want to approve the plan until they receive more solid state aid information from Montpelier.

“I think bringing (the budget) in below 3 percent still allows us to maintain our programs,” said Addison Central Supervisory Union Superintendent Gail Conley.

MIDDLEBURY — Three days a week, Middlebury resident Arnold Highfield makes the grueling trek to the dialysis center in Burlington where he watches his blood flow through a series of tubes into a machine where it is cleansed and returned to his body. He hopes to soon get a new kidney but in the meantime, he is not feeling sorry for himself.

Weybridge starts audit in embezzlement case

WEYBRIDGE — Town officials in Weybridge have hired a certified public accountant to do an independent audit of the town’s books in view of former Town Clerk/Treasurer Karen Brisson’s admission last month that she had embezzled municipal funds.

Weybridge Selectwoman Gale Hurd said the selectboard has hired Tom Telling, CPA, to conduct the audit, a process that was set to begin late last week following the receipt of cancelled checks from the bank. The financial audit is expected to last four to six weeks, according to Hurd.

Vergennes receptive to treatment center

VERGENNES — Vergennes officials and some neighbors of the former Briarwood Manor nursing home at 1 Alden Place said they could support the proposed reuse of the property as a 19-bed residential treatment facility for young women dealing with substance abuse and self-injury issues — provided organizers can assure the building will be secure and the program is well-run.

UPDATED 2:06 p.m.: Rep. Greg Clark mourned by colleagues, friends

VERGENNES — Longtime state Rep. Greg Clark, R-Vergennes, died on Friday, Nov. 30, after being struck by a southbound vehicle while scraping ice off his windshield at the side of Route 7 on Woodman’s Hill just south of Vergennes. He was 65.

Emergency responders were called to the scene at around 7:30 a.m. and immediately performed CPR on a critically injured Clark, who was taken to Porter Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Study looks at parking situation in downtown Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Downtown Middlebury possesses an abundance of downtown parking options, but locals, visitors and area workers continue to compete for “prime” spots in the Main Street area, resulting in low turnover of key spots near shops that a $5 parking fine and limited enforcement is not deterring.

UD-3 eyes 3.8% hike in spending at MUHS, MUMS

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union Middle and High School officials will spend the next few weeks sharpening their pencils in an effort to reduce a draft UD-3 budget of about $16.7 million that would represent a 3.8 percent increase compared to this year’s spending plan of roughly $16.1 million.

And any major cuts will likely come with some pain, administrators noted, as a vast majority of a proposed roughly $612,000 increase is associated with fixed costs.
