ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County and Brandon voters followed statewide trends on Tuesday in backing Democrat Peter Shumlin for governor, Republican Phil Scott for lieutenant governor, Democrat Jim Condos for secretary of state, and incumbent Republican Tom Salmon for state auditor.

Area voters also joined the groundswell of support that swept incumbent U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., to new terms in office.

Middlebury celebrates opening of new bridge

MIDDLEBURY — An army of pirates, goblins and superheroes poured across the Otter Creek on Saturday by way of a brand new span that had been on the town of Middlebury’s drawing board since the early 1950s.

And as the Halloween revelers danced on what a half century ago was only a dream, town officials had to be pinching themselves.

This was not a trick.

It was a treat.

NEW HAVEN — New Haven Republican Harvey Smith will be returning to the Montpelier after a four-year hiatus.

Voters in the Addison-5 House district of New Haven, Weybridge and Bridport gave Smith the nod over Weybridge Democrat Spence Putnam by a 1,003 to 843 margin after heavy voting on Tuesday.

“I’m thrilled,” Smith said of the result, which he said was a product of a lot of door-to-door campaigning.

“I wore out my shoes again,” he quipped.

BRIDPORT — Peter Damone came within a whisker of losing his life, has his jaw held in place by a metal bar and is essentially confined to his home except for short walks and trips to the doctor.

But if you ask him, he’ll tell you he’s one of the most fortunate men in the world.

“I came so close to being gone; you’ve got to feel lucky,” Damone, 76, said on Thursday during a visit on his back porch, where a stray bullet changed his world almost three months ago.

“I’m standing — how can you be mad?”

MIDDLEBURY — The Mary Hogan Elementary School board wants the public to weigh in on approximately $235,000 in 2011-2012 budget cuts that would be necessary for the school to comply with the state’s “Challenges for Change” request.

The Vermont Legislature and Education Commissioner Armando Vilaseca have asked the state’s school districts to prepare 2011-2012 budgets that reflect a 2-percent decrease in spending compared to this year. This Challenges for Change directive is designed to save around $23 million in overall education spending next year.

ADDISON COUNTY — A majority of Vermont lawmakers and Secretary of State Deb Markowitz find themselves at odds with many town clerks on the subject of a proposed Constitutional Amendment that would allow 17-year-olds to vote in primary elections.

The amendment — also known as Proposition 5 — would allow 17-year-olds to vote in primary elections, provided they turn 18 before the ensuing general election. The question will appear on the Nov. 2 ballot and has already been approved by two successive sessions of the Vermont General Assembly.

CORNWALL — Christine Hadsel and Suki Fredericks picked up what looked like a ratty, rolled-up drop-cloth and placed it on an expansive table in the Cornwall town office conference room late last week.

But as they gently unfurled the fabric, it became clear that this was not a piece of throwaway fabric.

Each turn of the roll revealed more real estate of a beautifully painted, late-summer lake scene, replete with lush trees surrounding an azure waterway with rolling hills in the background.
