MIDDLEBURY — Hartland Democrat and gubernatorial candidate Matt Dunne is pitching an economic recovery plan that he said would nurture growing businesses, create new jobs, weatherize aging apartment buildings and reduce the state’s carbon footprint, all at the same time.

Dunne shared his plan, and positions on other issues ranging from solar siting to health care, during a far-ranging interview at the Addison Independent on Thursday, May 5.

A new exhibit turns everyday objects into valuable 'ArtiFacts'

THTGallery1033.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — At first glance, most of the items being collected for the latest exhibit at Town Hall Theater’s Jackson Gallery look quite pedestrian.

A bottle of water.

An inexpensive Chinese lantern.

An old leather vest.

A small, crocheted angel.

A far cry from the distinguished portraits, vivid watercolors and delicate craftwork often on display at the Jackson Gallery.

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury is pursuing a second environmental assessment of the historic powerhouse structure at the base of the downtown Otter Creek falls to determine what, if any, cleanup will be needed at the site the town acquired from a local land trust several years ago.

The town is currently requesting proposals from four pre-qualified firms to complete a “Phase II Environmental Site Assessment” for the powerhouse property, also known as the David Page Cotton Mill site.

MUHS's Beauchamp wins coveted Gates scholarship

NickBeauchamp0224.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Some people become defined by tragedy and are unable to overcome it.

But Nick Beauchamp continues to draw inspiration from the worst night of his life — Sept. 10, 2005. That’s when his dad died in a car crash in New Jersey.

Beauchamp was only 6 years old at the time, but the events will forever be etched in his memory.

“My whole family huddled in the living room, torrents of tears sweeping through the room,” he wrote in an essay about that soul-draining day.

MIDDLEBURY — Chuck Miller, then a young graduate of the Berklee College of Music, found his professional life at a crossroads in 1968 — one of the most tumultuous years in this nation’s history. Assassins had taken the lives of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy. The U.S. was escalating its military involvement in an increasingly unpopular war in Vietnam.

Miller could have plunged into composing, performing or teaching.

Global events helped him make his decision.

MIDDLEBURY — Some of Porter Medical Center’s busiest providers briefly put down their stethoscopes and high-tech medical equipment on Thursday to collectively wield an over-sized pair of prop scissors. They used it to metaphorically cut the ribbon for the opening of Porter Women’s Health, which combines the talents of providers who previously worked out of Tapestry Midwifery & Women’s Health and Addison Associates in OB/GYN.
