MIDDLEBURY — Deer season in Vermont means diligently scanning the fields for game, getting up before sunrise and playing card games at camp.

And for many guys, it means growing beards — a nasty beard that itches until scissors and a razor deliver final relief when the shooting ends.

Clippings: Trip abroad puts age in perspective

Clippings by John Flowers Notre Dame Cathedral In Strasbourg.jpg

My brother-in-law Steve and I love to joke about how “old” we’re getting. He’ll ask me what it was like to witness the Boston Tea Party, and if I ever forget where I put my musket. I’ll ask him how he was able correspond with friends prior to the Pony Express, and whether he still gets cost-of-living bumps in his Civil War veteran’s pension.

In reality, we are both just a little north of 50. So while we both receive mail from AARP, we can hardly lay claim to being truly grizzled or wise.

CORNWALL — Cornwall Town Clerk Sue Johnson will soon be trading her town hall office for a very tiny, Spartan workspace in a nearby trailer.

No, she’s not being banished by community leaders. She’s just going to have to go through some short-term pain for the eventual gain of a renovated Cornwall Town Hall, which will feature a new roof, new quarters for the municipal library, additional storage space and a spruced-up environment in which to conduct town business.
