Shumlin narrowly outpolls Milne in Addison County

ADDISON COUNTY — Incumbent Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin scored a narrow overall victory over Republican challenger Scott Milne when the votes were counted in Addison County Tuesday evening, though a majority of the electorate in 14 of the county’s 23 communities declared a preference for Milne.

Shumlin, the two-term incumbent, received a combined 6,020 votes in Addison County during the General Election, compared to 5,761 for Milne. Libertarian Dan Feliciano garnered 583 tallies.

NEW HAVEN — Rep. Harvey Smith, R-New Haven, on Tuesday won another two years representing the Addison-5 district thanks to a decisive, 895 to 698 victory over Democratic challenger Susan Smiley, also of New Haven.

Sheldon and Nuovo triumph in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Democrats Amy Sheldon and Betty Nuovo on Tuesday staved off a spirited challenge from first-time candidate and Middlebury student Calvin McEathron in winning Middlebury’s two seats in the Vermont House.

Sheldon, an environmental consultant and former town planning commission member, was the top vote getter in the race for Addison-1’s two posts, with 1,310 tallies.

BMP leader urges action on report

MIDDLEBURY — Better Middlebury Partnership President Ben Wilson recently gave the Middlebury selectboard an overview of the results of a Future of Retail Study that a consultant performed for the town earlier this year.

At the Oct. 28 selectboard meeting, Wilson urged  town officials and the business community to seize on the report’s results — which showed some gaps in the local retail market — and take steps to make the Middlebury more of a magnet for local shoppers and tourists.

Baser in, Fisher out in Addison-4

BRISTOL — Bristol Republican Fred Baser on Tuesday rattled what had been a decade of Democratic dominance in the Addison-4 House district, and his victory will also likely have a big impact on the complexion of the Legislature’s health care reform debate during the next biennium.

Baser, in his second bid for one of Addison-4’s two House seats, was the top vote-getter in the four-town district with a total of 1,872 tallies. Rep. Dave Sharpe, D-Bristol, finished second in the race with 1,765 votes.

WomenSafe's Smith steps down after eventful tenure

MIDDLEBURY — Naomi Smith had spent several years as a Certified Public Accountant when, during the late 1990s, she felt a tug to a decidedly different profession. Instead of counting numbers, she wanted to become a person who other women could count on if they had become victims of domestic or sexual abuse.

So Smith took a job as shelter program director for Burlington’s Women Helping Battered Women organization.

Ripton Democrat Willem Jewett will not run for Majority Leader

RIPTON — Rep. Willem Jewett, D-Ripton, confirmed on Tuesday he will not seek re-election as House majority leader, saying he wants to return as a rank-and-file member of the Vermont House of Representatives to devote more time and energy to specific issues and constituent services.

“This was not a decision made in a moment,” Jewett told the Independent.

HOPE seeks hold on its mortgage

MIDDLEBURY — Officials at Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects, or HOPE, are asking the town of Middlebury to temporarily suspend the anti-poverty organization’s monthly payments on a $225,000 mortgage loan relating to its John Craven Community Services Center at 282 Boardman St.

Middlebury to phase out townwide recycling contract

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents beginning next April will be able to choose their own haulers to collect curbside recyclables from their homes and businesses. That’s because the Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday voted unanimously to discontinue the townwide recycling contract once the current pact with Casella expires on March 31, 2015.
