State budget deficit: How deep should cuts be?

BRISTOL — Citizens who attended the weekly Legislative Breakfast on Monday heard from lawmakers about their struggle with the fiscal year 2016 general fund budget, which is facing a projected $112 million revenue shortfall.

Among the proposed cuts under consideration to shore up the budget are two of the Vermont Department of Public Safety’s four Public Service Answering Points (PSAPs) — better known as E-911 dispatching centers — in Derby and Rutland.

Lawmakers, citizens debate renewable energy's future

BRISTOL — Renewable energy policy — particularly subsidies to firms that produce energy from renewable sources — was a point of debate among lawmakers and citizens at Monday’s legislative breakfast in Bristol. The event at the American Legion Hall also began with a moment of silence for the late Dr. Alan Ayer, who died suddenly on Friday, and was the husband of Sen. Claire Ayer (see story, Page 3A).

County mourns passing of Dr. Ayer

MIDDLEBURY — Dr. Alan Ayer introduced an estimated 6,000 people into the world during a 36-year career as an obstetrician-gynecologist in Middlebury. Many of those 6,000 people, and many more, were shaken to the core this week after learning of the untimely, sudden death of Ayer this past Friday, March 13. He was 71.

Middlebury gives its support to local hydro project

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury selectboard has sent a letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) confirming its support for what is being called the “Middlebury Upper Hydroelectric Project,” a water turbine that would be installed near the Otter Creek Falls.

New director at Middlebury rescue brings money-making plans

MIDDLEBURY — This spring will certainly be a season of renewal for Middlebury Regional Emergency Medical Services.

The nonprofit organization has hired a new executive director who will be launching some new services aimed at making MREMS more financially stable. The new hire — Ric Lavallee — will also lead a fund-raising effort to replace one of MREMS’ aging ambulances.

Middlebury College president-elect wants close town-gown ties

Patton is not even officially on the institution’s payroll yet, but she took time from her ongoing duties at Duke University to visit Middlebury municipal officials to assure them that maintaining a cordial and productive relationship with the town will be one of the top priorities of her administration.

State budget cuts continue to shape legislative session

MIDDLEBURY — School financing and the state’s budget woes continued to dominate conversation at the Bridport Grange’s legislative breakfast series, the most recent edition of which was held on Monday at the Middlebury American Legion headquarters.

Lawmakers have been told there is a $118 million revenue shortfall for the state budget that is to take effect July 1. The Legislature’s money committees are considering cuts to the current budget draft, along with some possible fee and tax increases.

ID-4 petitions nixed, but board to give voters their say

MIDDLEBURY — The ID-4 school board on March 4 rejected two citizens’ petitions seeking to change the date of the district’s annual meeting and the method by which the Mary Hogan Elementary School budget is voted, but the panel unanimously agreed to place two articles on ID-4’s April 8 meeting warning that would accomplish the same changes sought by the petitioners.
