The big news in the basketball world last week was that 7’0” Kansas freshman center Joel Embiid (“jo-el em-beed”) will leave college and enter the NBA draft in June.

Editor’s note: Independent sports columnist Karl Lindholm is filing his reports this year from Yaounde, Cameroon, West Africa.

There I was, last Saturday morning, sitting in a small grove at the Rain Forest International School (RFIS), at an all-day girls’ soccer and boys’ basketball tournament. The day was hot and muggy, and I was glad to be in the shade.

Lindholm: I never missed one from the stands

Ted Williams was wrong. Hitting a baseball is not the hardest task in sports. Reffing a basketball game is.

A few years back, I made a foolish decision. I agreed to become a basketball referee — not a real ref, a certified official, but far worse. I agreed to officiate games in the Middlebury Adult Men’s League in which I had played for nearly 15 years.

The Lions are in!

On Sunday, the Indomitable Lions, Cameroon’s national football team, defeated Tunisia 4-1 in a knockout game at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, here in Yaounde. So Cameroon will be going to the Really Big Dance in Brazil next June, la Coupe du Monde.

They were dancing in the streets in Yaounde. The World Cup is a very big deal here, and just about everywhere else in the world too.

The summer of my 21st year, a long time ago, I worked in a machine factory in a small town in Switzerland, about 20 miles from Zurich.

I had worked the previous eight summers at a golf course in Maine, and I was ready for a change, an adventure, something independent.

My co-workers at the factory accepted me as a curiosity. We all wore the same blue common-laborer jumpsuit. For many, I was the first American they had ever known.

Sports column by Karl Lindholm: Impossible Dream II – Red Sox surprise fans everywhere

It happened once before, a long time ago.

In the summer of 1966, the Red Sox were a bad team. They finished in ninth place with 72 wins and 90 losses, 26 games behind Baltimore, who won the AL pennant and then swept the Dodgers in the Series.

The following year, as many will recall, was the so-called “Impossible Dream” season. With new manager Dick Williams barking orders and Carl Yastrzemski playing out of his mind, the Red Sox were 92-70, won the AL pennant, and took the Cards to seven games in the World Series.

That’s right, I’m outtahere.

I’m already in Africa, where I will spend the next year.

Africa! How about that! — Cameroon, to be precise. Me. Africa. Imagine.

I’m just about the most provincial person I know. A trip to Burlington for me is a big deal. I have traveled much in Addison County. I am one comforted by routine and familiarity.

I teach a course at Middlebury on the literature and culture of Northern New England, which is essentially an examination of the Yankee archetype. I use myself as Exhibit A.

You figured their kids would be good athletes, but it took them a while to get together.

She said that was his fault. “I had to give him an ultimatum.” He sees it differently, “It took her a long time to see that I had a couple of things going for me.”

Sue Parsons was a junior at Middlebury when she started dating Bobby Ritter, a senior. That was 1982. They were married nine years later.

Sports column by Karl Lindholm: The pitcher's mound can be a dangerous place

Herb Score was the best young pitcher in baseball in 1955.

Possessed of a blazing fastball, Score won 16 games as a 21-year-old rookie that year and 20 the next. He led all Major League pitchers in strikeouts both years, averaging nearly 10 a game.

Score seemed destined for a brilliant career, barring injury.

Ah, that “barring injury” proviso, the intervention of fate.

The name doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, like Mickey Mantle or Bo Jackson, the players he is being compared to. That’s pretty good company.

He can also be compared to the great Negro League Hall of Famers, Oscar Charleston, perhaps, or even more precisely his countrymen, Cristóbal Torriente, “The Cuban Strongboy,” or “El Inmortal” Martin Dihigo.

Meet Yasiel Puig (yah-zeal pweeg).
