10 years of feral cats in Brandon cmyk Mei&Izzy_RGB.jpg

BRANDON — Mei Mei Brown is a sucker for cats. A lifelong lover of felines, she is also the driving force behind the Brandon Feral Cat Assistance Program, now celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Thanks to Brown’s diligence and love for the animal, what was once a big problem in Brandon is now under control. Over the last decade, 166 feral, or wild, cats have been trapped, spayed or neutered, and released or adopted.

“Yes, I am the crazy cat lady,” Brown joked in an interview last week.

Brandon voters back local option tax

Posted on July 9, 2015 |
By Lee J. Kahrs

BRANDON — On June 30, Brandon voters approved the establishment of a 1 percent local option tax on sales, meals and rooms, and alcohol, subject to the approval of the town charter, which was also approved.

The option tax measure passed by a vote of 328-132, with two ballots blank or spoiled. The charter was approved by a tally of 358-91.

Before a local option tax can be instituted in Vermont, the Legislature has to accept a change to that town’s charter. In the case of Brandon, this is actually its first charter.

RNeSU boards impose contracts

BRANDON — In a rare move and after a marathon executive session that saw midnight come and go, the boards of the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union and the Brandon School District voted in the early hours of June 18 to impose a contract with paraprofessionals and bus drivers after negotiations failed.

The boards and the National Education Association-Vermont Paraprofessional and Bus Unit have been negotiating the contract for 18 months. The sticking point has been salary increase percentages and health care contributions.

McKernon restored Vermont buildings to look their best

Posted on June 8, 2015 |
By Lee J. Kahrs

John McKernon, Jr. Picture.jpg

BRANDON — When most people die they leave a house and get a headstone to mark themselves in remembrance. Jack McKernon left hundreds of buildings all over Vermont: farmhouses, carriage houses, camps and barns, all meticulously redeemed to their former glory, or better.

McKernon died at his home in Rochester on May 28 at the age of 78. A man with a deep love for New England architecture and the finer things in life, McKernon changed the way Brandon looked, for the better as well.

Issue resolved, mosquito spraying resumes

Posted on May 28, 2015 |

BRANDON — Confusion between the regulators and a local insect control district last week threatened to halt mosquito spraying around Lake Dunmore and elsewhere in the area leading up to and during the first big weekend of the summer.

But the state Agency of Agriculture put commercial certification for the Brandon Leicester Salisbury Goshen Insect Control District on the fast track last week following the dispute over spraying private roads, and spraying resumed.

Sudden change in state policy hampers local mosquito spraying efforts

LEICESTER — In what local mosquito control officials are calling a “perfect storm” for breeding, the 2015 mosquito season may be one of the worst in recent memory, especially for residents living on private roads.

Last week’s first hatching of the season created mosquito swarms of epic proportions even for this area, which is used to dealing with high numbers of mosquitoes each spring and summer.

Memorial Day flower girl tradition spans generations

Flower girls in Brandon_Generations Radler.jpg

BRANDON — Every year on the last Monday in May, a group of first-grade girls in white dresses clutch bunches of fresh lilacs in their small hands. They walk single file up Center Street from the Brandon Post Office, smiling and waving to their families and friends. They follow the American Legion Color Guard and the Otter Valley and Neshobe School marching bands, and are joined by the Pittsford and Brandon fire department engines. The small parade with a purpose makes its way to the gazebo in Central Park.
