Sports Column by Matt Dickerson: A rainbow spotted before a storm

By Matt Dickerson

I arrived at the New Haven River at 7 p.m. Thankfully, though the water was still running clear, the light rain of the previous few days had the water up a bit from the unseasonably low level of early May. The sky was overcast, but the weather was holding. Conditions looked promising all around. Furthermore, the forecast was for steady rain the next few days, including scattered thunderstorms, so I expected this evening to be the pick of the week.

Sports column by Matt Dickerson: Trout season is heating up

I started my drive toward Otter Creek two hours before sunset. My waders and fly-rod were in the back of the car along with a couple tins of new flies freshly tied over the winter and still undamaged by rocks, branches, or the mouths of fish.

Matt Dickerson: Opening day of trout season featured some success stories

As is so often the case in Vermont’s early April, the weather and water conditions leading up to opening day of trout fishing were fickle. When the week began, rivers were running unseasonably low and clear thanks in large part to a lack of snow. Very fishable water levels and visibility, combined with a series of warm sunny days during the first half of the week, seemed to promise a delightful — and perhaps even successful — opening day.

I began 2013 with a mental fishing “wish list.” There are a few perennial entries: an all-expenses-paid trip for Atlantic salmon in Labrador or Newfoundland; more time to fish in my favorite Vermont rivers (plus a trip or two with family and friends to Maine and New York); and an increase in the quality trout waters in the state.

Outdoor column by Matt Dickerson: Pursuit of trout in a surprising spot

If I had been asked a few months ago to name the state with the largest chapter of Trout Unlimited, my first few guesses would have been the classic fly-fishing and trout states of Montana, Idaho or Wyoming. If I had been reminded of the low population densities of those states, I might have instead guessed Colorado (and some river in the Denver area) or Michigan (with its famous trout streams not too far north of Detroit) or even California or Oregon. Or perhaps Maine. Or New York.

Indeed, there are many other states I would have guessed before I landed on Texas.
