ESSEX JUNCTION — IBM, the largest single private employer in Vermont, is putting its semi-conductor business up for sale, according to reports in the financial press. Frank Cioffi, president of the Greater Burlington Industrial Corp. (GBIC), however, is hopeful that if the Essex facility is sold, it will remain open under new ownership.

The potential impact on the regional economy should IBM close would be enormous.

Farm Bill defeat creates problems for farmers

By Michelle Monroe (St. Albans Messenger)

ST. ALBANS — Late last week the U.S. House of Representatives rejected the U.S. Farm Bill, 234-195, thereby setting up the potential for devastating effects on the dairy industry and local farmers.

The rejection came after last-minute amendments made further changes to nutrition programs for the poor and removed the dairy price stabilization programs from the bill.

Dairy farmers lose federal safety net

ST. ALBANS — When the U.S. House of Representatives adjourned on Sept. 28 without passing a new Farm Bill, it not only left dairy farmers without a safety net, it raised the specter of chaos in agricultural markets.

In effect, Congress’s failure to act could trigger a so-called permanent law that, it is estimated, could raise the parity price of milk to the $40 per hundredweight (cwt.) range.

ST. ALBANS — Despite his wealth and Harvard degrees, Jack McMullen says he came from humble origins.

McMullen is the Republican challenger to Democratic Attorney General William Sorrell in this November’s General Election.

McMullen’s father suffered rheumatic fever as a child, leaving him with fragile health throughout his life. As one of five children, McMullen, who is from Long Island, went to work at 11.

“Our family was — what’s the technical term — poor,” said McMullen.

Farmers offer Rep. Welch an earful on federal price support

Posted on August 18, 2011 |
By Michelle Monroe (St. Albans Messenger) and Andrea Suozzo

ST. ALBANS/NEW HAVEN — Farmers had plenty of suggestions for Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., as he solicited feedback about a proposed federal dairy reform bill in St. Albans last Wednesday and at Addison County Fair and Field Days in New Haven on Friday.

The bill in question is a draft proposal by Minnesota Rep. Colin Peterson. The plan would replace the Milk Income Loss Contract (MILC) and the Dairy Product Price Supports programs and change the federal milk order system that sets the wholesale price conventional milk producers get for their product.

Way sought to make taxes more equitable

ST. ALBANS — School taxes are the missing piece in an ongoing effort to revamp Vermont’s tax structure, according to Rep. Carolyn Branagan, R-Georgia. To remedy that problem the state recently hired a California firm to study the state’s education taxes.

Earlier this year, a blue ribbon tax commission released an analysis and recommendations for the state income and sales taxes.

St. Albans Messenger

ST. ALBANS — It’s the economy that’s behind poll numbers showing a possible Republican takeover of the U.S. House of Representatives on Election Day, according to Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt.

Nothing that the government has done has been sufficient to alleviate the suffering and anxiety of the people who’ve lost their jobs and those who fear losing them, he said.

ST. ALBANS — Given the state’s fiscal challenges, his four primary opponents aren’t being realistic in what they are telling voters, according to Democratic gubernatorial candidate Doug Racine.

“I think they’re living in campaign land, which says, nothing bad can ever happen with a $100 million deficit. We can fix it without it costing us anything at all. There’s too much of it in Washington,” Racine said.
