Vermont lawmakers press for Farm Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Vermont lawmakers are taking a lead in drafting a new Farm Bill in Washington. Sen. Patrick Leahy and Rep. Peter Welch, both Democrats, have pledged to make the passage of the critical agricultural bill a priority, particularly after dairy farms in the state were dealt heavy blows last year due to weather and market fluctuations.

New Haven voters correct budget, affirm ballots

NEW HAVEN — Voters in New Haven on Tuesday remedied an error in the town’s General Fund budget by approving, in Australian ballot voting, a supplemental spending increase of $218,997, which will be used to pay off owed school taxes to the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union.

There were 202 ballots cast; the supplemental budget increase passed 136-66.

Willowell’s outdoor preschool wraps up a successful pilot year

STARKSBORO — An unusual nature-and-arts-based preschool program is wrapping up a successful pilot year.

The Wren’s Nest Preschool is a project of the Willowell Foundation and run by a mother-daughter team of educators. Katie and Karen McEachen of Bristol co-teach the weekly sessions, which are currently run out of Camp Common Ground in Starksboro.

“Willowell has been doing nature education for high schoolers for a decade, and they thought that a preschool would be a really nice sister program,” Katie McEachen said in a recent interview.

New Haven to settle budget size and voting questions at special town meeting

NEW HAVEN — Residents of New Haven will meet at a special town meeting next Monday and then vote on Tuesday by Australian ballot on a nearly quarter-million-dollar supplement to the General Fund budget for this coming fiscal year due to a budgeting error. They will also discuss and vote on whether to switch back to voice voting on the town budget at future town meetings.

The Monday meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the town hall. Voting is Tuesday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. by Australian ballot, also at the town hall.

College protesters push trustees to divest from weapons, global warming

MIDDLEBURY — Several dozen Middlebury College students marked the last day of spring semester classes with a protest outside of the administrative buildings at Old Chapel that lasted through Friday night and into the next day, serenading the board of trustees’ May meeting with a barrage of speeches, chants and acoustic guitar songs.

Pizza was served, and points were made.

Trout & Strawberries: Area farm embraces aquaponics with Working Lands grant

MONKTON — Trout and strawberries have always been sought-after seasonal treats in Vermont.

Now, Silas Doyle-Burr, 25, of the Last Resort Farm in Monkton is developing an aquaponics system that will support year-round production of up to 2,000 strawberry bushes and 4,500 trout.

BRISTOL — Last week, the Mount Abraham Union High School gymnasium was transformed. The bleachers were pushed back and colorful displays of mounted paintings and drawings, shiny metalwork and intricate sculptures filled the space.

Monkton’s rescue squad set to relaunch this June

MONKTON — After more than a year without first response service, Monkton is poised to get its rescue squad back.

Four Monkton EMTs, led by assistant fire chief Kevin Alexander, are applying for licensure from the Vermont Department of Health and hope to be up and running in June.

 “It’ll bring quicker response time,” said Alexander, an EMT who serves with Bristol Rescue in addition to his service with the Monkton Fire Department. “There’s definitely a need.”

Bristol selectboard seeks applicants for fire station panel

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard will be accepting applications from those wishing to serve on a planning committee as the search for an improved facility for Bristol’s fire department proceeds. Committee members will do the legwork on site selection and may continue serving into the design stage. Applications for the committee will be posted on the town’s website later this week, and will also be available at the town office.

Community aims to tune up Bristol playground

BRISTOL — The Bristol town green is a favorite place for community activity, particularly during the summer months when it hosts the weekly farmers’ market, as well as various events and festivals.

Some Bristol residents are looking to improve what is already a popular gathering spot. A team of six community members, led by the Bristol Downtown Community Partnership (BDCP) and supported by the recreation department, are looking to renovate the playground on the west side of the green.
