Regional planning commission affirms support for pipeline

MIDDLEBURY — In a confirmation of its previous support, the Addison County Regional Planning Commission (ACRPC) board voted 23 to 9 on Wednesday, July 1, to continue its support of Phase I of Vermont Gas Systems’ Addison Natural Gas Project.

Rainy June bogs down farmers

ADDISON COUNTY — According to the National Weather Service, June’s rainfall in Burlington of 8.67 inches proved to be the third highest since 1884, trailing only 1922 and 2013.

Nobody had to tell Vermont farmers that news.

“Every year we have our little times and issues with wet weather,” said Peter James, co-owner of Weybridge’s Monument Farms. “But this year it’s been the entire month of June.”

Heavy rain and clouds in June pose special problems for dairy farmers.

ACTR drivers unionize; contract to be negotiated

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) drivers and mechanics have voted to unionize through the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 597. Workers last week voted 10 to 7 in favor of that action, with one challenged ballot.

A previous union drive initiated last year by ACTR workers failed by a close 9-8 tally.

James Moulton, executive director of ACTR, explained the process that will now unfold.

Group offers zero-interest loans to spur local small businesses

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Economic Development Corp. (ACEDC) is well-known for maintaining a revolving loan fund that allows qualifying businesses to borrow tens of thousands of dollars.

The ACEDC is now serving as a bridge for no-interest loans for local entrepreneurs seeking as little as $500 to help jump-start their small enterprises.

Arts Beat for July 6: Festival on-the-Green offers entertainment for the whole family

Middlebury’s exciting Festival on-the-Green continues on Tuesday. Here are the highlights. At noon, Stephen Gratto will present a Brown Bag Special performance for the whole family. At 7 p.m., the Miles Donahue Quintet, described as “a jazz treasure,” hits the stage. Then, at 8:30 p.m., Darlingside will perform. “A quartet with a rich line in acoustic textures and chamber-rock dynamics,” says one enthusiastic reviewer.

New recycling rules take effect this week

ADDISON COUNTY — Beginning this Wednesday, all residents of Vermont will be required to recycle metal, glass, plastic, paper and cardboard refuse in compliance with state’s Universal Recycling Law.

The law, also known as Act 148, is designed to greatly reduce Vermont’s levels of solid waste by phasing in bans on recyclables, leaf and yard debris, and food scraps from the landfill by the year 2020. The first phase of the law only prohibits the disposal of mandated recyclables.

$25K grant to help rural children

MIDDLEBURY — The Turrell Fund presented its 20th annual S. Whitney Landon Award to the Mary Johnson Children’s Center of Middlebury for their program “RFD” (“Rural Fun Delivery”). The award included an unrestricted grant of $25,000. Two other grants in the amount of $2,500 were granted to VSA Vermont and Greater Burlington YMCA.
