Editor’s note: In the first of two installments looking at slaughterhouses in Vermont, we examine what happens to the bulk of Vermont’s dairy cows — animals that are typically shipped out of state to be slaughtered. This Thursday, we’ll turn our attention to the growing market for local meats, the challenges facing smaller meat producers and slaughterhouses, and the creative solutions some farmers are exploring to make beef production more profitable.

Bridge update: Public meetings slated for Tuesday and Wednesday

ADDISON —The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and Vermont Agency of Transportation this week will host two public information meetings regarding available transportation alternatives for crossing Lake Champlain and the plan to repair and reopen the Lake Champlain Bridge spanning from Chimney Point in Addison, Vt., to Crown Point, N.Y.

Bridge update: Pedestrian ferry to take commuters between Basin Harbor and New York

ADDISON — Residents and commuters stranded by the Champlain Bridge closing may soon have an alternative way to cross Lake Champlain: a pedestrian ferry.

That's part of the latest update concerning the bridge closing. In other news on the bridge front, a new Web site is being developed to post daily updates from the New York and Vermont departments of transportation.

Bill would put medical marijuana in pharmacies

ADDISON COUNTY — An Addison County lawmaker is pushing for legislation that would make it easier for approved Vermont users of medical marijuana to obtain the drug. That effort comes as the Obama administration earlier this week directed federal prosecutors not to pursue cases against drug users complying with state medical marijuana laws.

Cornwall judge confirmed as chair of U.S. sentencing commission

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Chief United States District Judge William K. Sessions III of Cornwall was confirmed today by the Senate as chair of the United States Sentencing Commission. Sessions had been nominated for this post by President Barack Obama on April 20, 2009.

County residents ready for climate action

ADDISON COUNTY — This Saturday, Oct. 24, people will be cycling through the streets of Kitale, Kenya. In Beirut, Lebanon, others will ride buses handing out flyers. The people of Chitral, Pakistan, will play an all-day game of freestyle polo. And in towns throughout Addison County, people will eat, ride bikes, drum and ring church bells.

The cause that unites these far-flung events is climate change. The vehicle: 350.org, an organization started close to home, in Middlebury.

Farmers push co-ops for dairy overhaul

ADDISON COUNTY — Farmers in Addison County may be rallying behind milk price stabilization plans, but some of the dairy co-ops that collect and market their milk have been slow to the table.

Now, frustrated by what Orwell farmer Tom Audet dubbed the “sluggish” response of dairy cooperatives, many of those farmers are chastising their co-ops for failing to take strong stands on supply management programs.

Arguing that a little state can be the perfect proving ground for new federal programs, Bray is eyeing a possible pilot project with the United States Department of Agriculture to help Vermont get more fresh, local foods into Vermont schools.

Vermont clinics hit by flu vaccine delay

ADDISON COUNTY — Kim Farnsworth, who works in the front office at Mountain Health Center in Bristol, said the phones have been ringing off the hook with patients trying to track down a dose of the seasonal flu vaccine.

But right now, the clinic has bad news for those patients: Mountain Health Center, like many organizations in Addison County, still hasn’t received any shipments of the seasonal flu vaccine, let alone the H1N1 swine flu vaccine. So Farnsworth is taking down names and phone numbers, and she’s telling patients that the clinic will call when they can schedule flu shots.
