The statewide ballot should also be a magnet for voters, as it features some hotly contested face-offs for offices ranging from auditor to governor.

ADDISON COUNTY — A majority of Vermont lawmakers and Secretary of State Deb Markowitz find themselves at odds with many town clerks on the subject of a proposed Constitutional Amendment that would allow 17-year-olds to vote in primary elections.

The amendment — also known as Proposition 5 — would allow 17-year-olds to vote in primary elections, provided they turn 18 before the ensuing general election. The question will appear on the Nov. 2 ballot and has already been approved by two successive sessions of the Vermont General Assembly.

ADDISON COUNTY — Across the United States, nine teens have committed suicide in the past month, a result of anti-gay bullying.

While Vermont has been lucky enough to avoid similar sobering incidents, local school and community organizations are adding their voices to the nationwide campaigns aimed at remembering the teens who died and raising awareness about the issues that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) teens — and others — face.

ADDISON COUNTY — The Mount Abraham Union High School garden began its first year at about 600 square feet. Now, as it wraps up its second year, the garden has doubled in size.

Mount Abe is just one of many schools in the county that have been taking the first steps toward incorporating more local food and nutrition education into their curriculums, in some cases bringing academic studies a little closer to technical agricultural programs.

ADDISON COUNTY — An estimated 50 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 turned out to vote in the 2008 presidential elections, setting national records for youth turnout.
In the lead up to the elections this November, though, clerks in Addison County say they haven’t seen a huge rush of younger voters registering.

“I haven’t had any young kids come to the counter (to register),” said Vergennes city clerk Joan Devine, thinking back to the past couple of months. “Just our regular people — ones who have moved into town.”

Editor’s note: This is the first of a two-part series on changes in teaching about food and agriculture in area schools.

ADDISON COUNTY — In Steve Colangeli’s classroom, students learn biology, chemistry, environmental science and economics, plus job skills like teamwork.

But Colangeli’s classroom doesn’t have four walls. Instead, it’s rows of raised beds, 10 in all. And despite the looming winter, his students are already working to get the beds ready for next year’s growing season.

Local businesses making ends meet

ADDISON COUNTY — None of a wide range of business owners, executives and experts recently asked about the area’s economy were ready to announce that happy days are here again: Their attitudes ranged from cautiously optimistic to skeptical, but hopeful.

In a statement echoed by many interviewed, Waybury Inn co-owner Joe Sutton said he and others in the hospitality sector have adapted to flat or modest growth.

“Basically, even is the new good,” Sutton said. “The general concept is staying at par ... or up a little bit is OK, and you have to watch your expenditures.”

ADDISON COUNTY — Several roads across the county were closed on Friday morning due to flooding brought on by the heavy rainfall the area received at the end of last week.

A stretch of Route 116 in Bristol was shut down Friday morning, as were sections of River Road in New Haven and Route 7 near McConnell Road in Brandon. As waters continued to rise, a section of Three Mile Bridge Road from Route 7 to Halladay Road in Middlebury was closed, and a portion of Route 125 in Ripton was reduced to one lane.
