Quinn stepping down after three decades of service

ADDISON COUNTY — John Quinn has served as Addison County State’s Attorney for 24 years and was a deputy state’s attorney for seven years before that.

More than anything, in looking back over his three decades prosecuting crimes here he says he appreciates the citizens who’ve supported him.

“I hope they think I’ve done a good job,” he said.

It’s pretty clear that most of them did. He only once faced an opponent in the race for the elected office.

On Monday, Quinn, 59, announced that he was retiring from the office he has occupied for majority of his career.

MIDDLEBURY — Nestled among his cows in Cornwall, a dairy farmer holds up a large-scale image of Switzerland crafted from pink insulation material.

Down the road, a husband-and-wife pair running a Cornwall farm stand posed with the outline of the United States. A Middlebury shopkeeper hides behind the long, boot-like silhouette of Italy, and a Burlington woman hunkers down beside the image of Africa, posted on the wall of her house.

ADDISON COUNTY — For local automobile dealerships, the “Cash for Clunkers” program has been a mixed blessing.

On one hand, the $1 billion government rebate program — which offers customers up to $4,500 if they trade in a gas-guzzling “clunker” for a more fuel efficient new car — has jumpstarted business at local dealerships. Since the program kicked off in late July, dozens of county residents have purchased new cars.

By Kathryn Flagg

WASHINGTON, D.C. — After weeks of pleading their case for struggling dairymen in Washington, D.C., Vermont’s Congressional delegation finally made a breakthrough Friday, when the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that the Obama administration is taking immediate action to boost prices paid to dairy farmers.

That means that the price the federal government pays for milk and dairy products in the marketplace is set to go up for August, September and October, a price hike that the USDA estimates will increase dairy farmers’ revenue nationally by $243 million.

BARRE — Two close losses in this past weekend’s state championship tournament in Barre ended the Addison County American Legion baseball team’s hopes of repeating as Vermont champion.

AC entered the eight-team tournament as a co-favorite after winning the program’s first-ever Northern Division regular season title, but opened the tournament on Friday with a 5-4 upset at the hands of Southern Division No. 4 seed Bellows Falls.

AC eliminated Northern No. 3 Essex on Saturday, but Northern No. 2 Orleans-Essex-Caledonia (OEC) ousted AC on Sunday, 8-6.

ADDISON COUNTY — A Vermont Milk Commission meeting last week ended in much the same way that many conversations about Vermont’s flagging dairy industry have ended this year: with state officials looking once again to Washington.

The commission’s July 23 meeting culminated with a resolution thanking Vermont’s Congressional delegation for its work in trying to increase prices paid to dairy farmers, and asking those delegates to convey to the White House and the Office of Management and Budget the “emergency nature of the needed aid” for dairy farmers.

Lawmakers seek relief for dairy farms

WASHINGTON, D.C. — When the Vermont Milk Commission meets late this week in Montpelier, undoubtedly the discussion will focus to the precarious state of Vermont’s floundering dairy industry.

It’s a conversation that has spread beyond Vermont, as lawmakers’ efforts to drum up support and attention to the dairy crisis ramped up in Washington, D.C., this month.

But it’s also a conversation that has some dairy advocates asking just what federal legislators can and will do to turn around the dairy slump.

Four county towns to land scenic byways designations

ADDISON COUNTY — The Vermont Scenery Preservation Council (VSPC) has recommended that key stretches of roads in four Addison County communities be included in the Lake Champlain Byway network, a designation that could bring more tourists and new federal aid for physical improvements to those areas.

The VSPC has specifically recommended that Route 7 in Ferrisburgh; Route 30 in Middlebury; Route 30 in Cornwall; and Route 73 and Mt. Independence Road in Orwell all be given a “Byway” designation, which carries national recognition.

ADDISON COUNTY — In a year when dismal federal milk prices have slammed Vermont’s dairy industry, unmooring the cornerstone of Vermont’s agricultural industry, some state legislators might be hard pressed to sound a note of optimism about the future of agriculture in Vermont.

Not Rep. Christopher Bray, D-New Haven. Ask Bray, and he’ll tell you the silver lining to the doom and gloom agriculture forecast boils down to two words: economic development.

Heavy rains hurt county farmers

By KATHRYN FLAGG
ADDISON COUNTY — Rain, rain, go away.

That’s the refrain taken up this summer by farmers and gardeners around the county, as heavier than normal rainfall in June drowned out some efforts at summer planting and harvesting.

The National Weather Service in Burlington tallied 5.25 inches of precipitation last month — nearly 2 inches more than the normal June rainfall, said meteorologist Jessica Neiles.
