RNeSU towns to see relief on tax rates

BRANDON — Some taxpayers in Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union towns — including Brandon, Goshen, Leicester and Whiting — will be very pleased come Town Meeting Day. Most area school budgets will translate into significant reductions in the local tax rate thanks to lower proposed spending and the state per pupil spending formula.

Cafe Provence adds new course

BRANDON — Café Provence chef Robert Barral and Line Barral will buy the downtown Brandon building that houses the restaurant and expand their business plan.
Robert Barral confirmed last week that he and his business partner are buying the Café Provence building on Center Street and will transform the larger space downstairs into a private dining room and state-of-the-art kitchen for cooking classes.

Brandon businesses showing new vitality

BRANDON — The downtown Brandon business community has been through a rough patch, but it is seeing signs of light.
The last few years have meant more empty storefronts on Park and Center streets, but despite “The Great Recession” six new businesses have moved in over the last six months, with four opening in November alone. As a testament to the hard work and creativity of Brandon residents, every one of these businesses is locally owned and operated.
What follows is a brief description of the new businesses.

OVUHS board considers trimming teaching positions

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School Board’s biggest challenge is not coming from state officials this budget season, but from students. Or lack thereof.
A continuing decline in the student population has left the board with a much greater budgetary test than meeting state’s Challenges for Change target of cutting spending by 2 percent.
The cuts may result in the termination of the School Resource Officer (SRO) position currently held by Brandon Police Officer Anne Bandy, one science teacher and two English teachers.

Otter Valley directors urged to keep police officer's post

BRANDON — Many of the 16 people who attended the Nov. 17 meeting of the Otter Valley Union High School board voiced their support for Brandon Police Officer Anne Bandy and the position of School Resource Officer (SRO). The board is expected to cut the position in its 2011-2012 budget, netting a savings of $38,000.
Social Studies teacher Judy Dardeck has been at OV for 37 years and said she definitely feels an SRO is needed.

OV produces another 'Beauty'

BRANDON — The backstage at Otter Valley Union High School was abuzz with activity Monday night as more than 40 students and adults prepared for the first full dress rehearsal of the school musical, Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.”
The cafeteria had become one large dressing room and was a whirlwind of activity as scores of kids donned make-up, wigs and costumes. Hair was teased, corsets were tightened and hair spray wafted about in abundance.

RNeSU talks teacher contracts

BRANDON — After more than a year, officials in the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union are hopeful that negotiations may be nearing an end, although the issues of salary and benefits remain on the table.

“We’re optimistic that we’ll have a resolution here in the next couple of months,” said RNeSU Superintendent John Castle.

OV students mix hands-on, classroom learning

BRANDON — Last Thursday, Vermont education Commissioner Armando Vilaseca sat in a camp chair on the floor of a canvas tent behind Otter Valley Union High School, listening with rapt attention to a debate about dams and hydro power.

The four students at the front of the tent, as well as the five others watching, attend the Moosalamoo Center for the first part of every school day as part of an experiential environmental education program run through the Brandon high school.

Internet safety key in cyber-bully battle

BRANDON — In a recent presentation at the Otter Valley Union High School auditorium, a mother detailed how she dealt with a case of Internet bullying affecting her own daughter. A teenage girl described how a family friend’s daughter killed herself after repeated bullying online.

Brandon artist shows 'sunny' side in new work

BRANDON — “It’s like icing a cake,” said renowned artist and Brandon resident Warren Kimble of his process in creating his new work, unveiled for the first time at an opening reception on Sept. 5 at Brandon Music on Country Club Road. As fate would have it, Kimble revealed the work in Brandon Music Café, the same studio and gallery he worked in years ago.
