BRISTOL — How do you get a group of teens to discuss and learn about the socially taboo and awkward topic of sex?

Give them $100.

That’s the strategy Jim Lockridge, director of The Hub teen center, and Ryan Krushenick, program coordinator at the Bristol center, are taking to engage young adults in a federally funded sex education program. To encourage local teens to participate in the course, which begins Monday, May 14, at The Hub, Lockridge and Krushenick are earmarking for participants one-third of the $300-per-person funding provided by the feds.

BRANDON — It was with mixed feelings that Rep. Joe Acinapura, R-Brandon, officially announced this week he will not seek a fourth term in the Vermont House.

Local murmurs about the decision had been rumbling for months, and in an interview on the steps of Acinapura’s Park Street home Monday morning, the 73-year-old confirmed that he had made his choice some time ago.

Hannaford bags store at new Brandon plaza

Posted on May 3, 2012 |
By Lee Kahrs

BRANDON — The Hannaford supermarket chain has pulled out of the beleaguered Brandon Plaza project, citing economic changes and the lengthy permitting process.

Developer Bill McCabe had been counting on the store to anchor his long-delayed shopping center project at the intersection of Route 7 and Nickerson Road. From its corporate headquarters in Scarborough, Maine, Hannaford officials cited a change in the economic climate since the project entered the local permitting process in 2009.

Otter Valley board approves 2.3% budget increase

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School board last week approved a proposed $10,332,550 spending plan for 2012-13. That represents an increase of $233,918 or 2.32 percent over the current spending plan.

There was none of the drama of past year’s budget talks when the fate of two items in the budget — the alternative education Harvest Program and the school resource officer — were in question. For the record, both of those line items are intact.

BRANDON — The polished but ancient wood floors creaked with familiarity last Saturday as old friends and customers stopped by the Briggs Carriage Bookstore in downtown Brandon one last time.

Erin Keyes, 18, considers Briggs an integral part of her life. Having grown up in Brandon, some of Keyes’s earliest memories are set in the bookstore.

“Just seeing something I’ve grown up with end, it’s like part of my childhood going away,” she said, as she sat in the bench nook of the children’s section with her mom, Laura King.

BRANDON — Although photographer Neal White is best known for his black and white silver gelatin prints, he says he wouldn’t go back to film photography for all the tea in China. Digital photography, he says, is just far superior.
