BRISTOL — As a child, you may have been given a lollipop or a sticker after braving a doctor’s visit. At Bristol’s Mountain Health Center, you’ll probably get a few tomatoes and a bag of spinach.

The modern twist on giving a treat after a doctor’s visit is feasible because of a new garden outside the Health Center office featuring healthy options such as tomatoes, spinach, arugula and kale.

By Zach Despart

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard on Monday debated how to handle a discrepancy in town zoning maps that could delay the siting of a new firehouse.

A committee charged with researching a prime location for a new firehouse last month recommended to the selectboard that it be built on West Street. The site contains portions of the Bristol Recreation Club and a plot owned by Ed and Suzanne Shepard.

By Addison Independent

BRISTOL — Organizers for the Three Day Stampede say they’ve collected a record number of donations for this year’s event, and they’re looking for more.

“As of today we have collected over five tractor-trailer loads full of everything from furniture to home décor to sporting goods for your shopping pleasure,” founder and organizer Bonita Bedard said in a statement. “Saturday’s drop-offs alone filled a 48-foot trailer, leaving us scrambling to store the remainder of the items.”

Barn theatre series calls it quits

ShakespeareintheBarn1381.jpg

BRISTOL — At the barn at Baldwin Creek, the curtain will soon fall on a summer tradition for the final time. For 18 summers, Shakespeare in the Barn at Mary’s has staged plays in the makeshift theater, but this year will be the last.

It’s not dwindling attendance or financial woes that are the cause — in fact, organizers expect a full house for every performance this year. Rather, the folks who put on the plays said it was just time to call it quits.

Mainly Metals Guy2088.jpg

BRISTOL — David Durgin is a busy man.

The Bristol resident owns Mainly Metals, a machine and fabrication shop that uses a unique water jet technology to cut materials of all sorts.

“It’s a jet of water with garnet mixed in,” Durgin explains. “The jet is about 1/30,000 of an inch in diameter — the size of a mechanical pencil lead — that comes out around 50,000 pounds per square inch.”

What that adds up to is one extremely precise machine.

Jackson, 31, has been working out of this location, on Main Street across from Bristol Bakery, for two years now.

Mount Abe raising funds to build a new composter

Posted on July 7, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

BRISTOL — Students at Mount Abraham Union High School are raising funds for a composting system at the school that will allow cafeteria food waste to be used for the school’s community garden.

The new composting system — which student organizers hope to have in place as soon as later this summer — will mean the school will send less solid waste to landfills, and that food waste can instead nourish the 600 pounds of vegetables Mount Abe’s garden produces annually.
