Bixby engaging public, eyeing future

VERGENNES — While Bixby Memorial Free Library officials and patrons last week celebrated recent work that allows more people to enter the city landmark at the same time (see story, Page 1), the library board members are also amid a months-long process that will help them decide how the Bixby will use its new capacity.

By the end of the year, Bixby officials intend to have in place a new strategic plan that should cover at least the next three years.

The free reading will begin at 7 p.m. and is co-sponsored by the Bristol Gateway Players and by Vermont Family Forests.

Challenge to ANeSU unification is offered

BRISTOL — A trio of dissenters said no to the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Act 46 Study Committee’s official plan for district unification, which was sent to the Agency of Education for review this month.

The official proposal includes a “Minority Report” — authored by committee members Nancy Cornell, Herb Olson and Mike Fisher — that makes a passionate defense of the “value of local control” of ANeSU schools.

HOPE planning to renovate subsidized apartment building

BRISTOL — At its Monday meeting, the Bristol selectboard agreed to sponsor an application by the organization Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) to the Vermont Community Development Program for a $30,000 planning grant to renovate two subsidized housing buildings on Hunt Farm Road.

“We really do need housing for low-income people,” said HOPE Executive Director Jeanne Montross. “We desperately need housing for low-income people.”

Residents in New Haven, Starksboro and Lincoln to see lower tax rates

ADDISON COUNTY — Many property owners in the northeast corner of Addison County will be seeing lower tax bills this year.

Property tax rates are down for resident homeowners in Lincoln, New Haven and Starksboro and for nonresident property owners in Lincoln, compared to last year. Nonresidents in New Haven and Starksboro will see slightly higher property taxes.

Selectboards in all three towns recently set tax rates for this year.

ANeSU governance plan filled with state

BRISTOL — The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union has crossed a major hurdle toward district unification under Act 46. The ANeSU Act 46 Study Committee sent its official governance unification proposal to the Agency of Education last Friday, Aug. 5.

If the proposal is accepted by state officials, residence in the five Bristol-area towns that comprise the ANeSU will vote in November on whether to unify governance of their schools under one school board with one budget.

Sharpe, Cordes make grade in Bristol-area House primary

BRISTOL — Democratic voters in the Bristol area on Tuesday selected incumbent Rep. Dave Sharpe of Bristol and Mari Cordes of Lincoln as their party’s nominees for the two Addison-4 House seats representing Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton and Starksboro.

They will now move on to the General Election to face two Republicans: incumbent Rep. Fred Baser of Bristol and Valerie Mullin of Monkton.
