Bristol teens cited for driving ATVs illegally

BRISTOL — Bristol police alleged that a 13-year-old and two 16-year-olds were illegally operating all terrain vehicles and a dirt bike on the roadway and eluding law enforcement on Oct. 18.

A Bristol officer responded to Lower Meadow Lane last Tuesday after a resident called to complain about ATVs operating along Mountain Street through Meadow Lane.

Bristol board eyes plans for old firehouse

BRISTOL — The old North Street fire station in Bristol could see new life as a mixed-use business space or a museum if either of two proposals by two local men comes to fruition.

At its Oct. 17 meeting, the Bristol selectboard took a first look at proposals for the building, which ended its 119-year run as the community firehouse this past summer when the fire department moved into its new station on West Street.

Bristol water leaks draw official attention

BRISTOL — Bristol Selectman Joel Bouvier raised concerns about water system leaks on Pine and Mountain View streets during the Bristol selectboard’s meeting Monday. The utility management company 64 Seconds estimated the Pine Street leak at 20 gallons per minute and the Mountain View leak at 15 gallons per minute.

Water leak destroys floor of Mount Abe gym; repair work begins

BRISTOL — At an emergency meeting last Wednesday, the Mount Abraham Union High School board authorized Superintendent Patrick Reen to contract with vendors to repair a water leak and replace the MAUHS gym floor.

“We have water that is leaking under the gym floor at Mount Abe and it has ruined the floor,” Reen told the Independent.

Better L8 Than Never showcased 260 vintage vehicles

BRISTOL — Classic car owners were in for a treat at the 12th annual Better L8 Than Never car show, held on Sept. 25 in Bristol. The event is co-hosted by the Addison County Chamber of Commerce and the Snake Mountain Cruisers, a Vermont classic car club based in New Haven.

Perhaps it was the warm weather and clear skies, or else just the draw of the slick lines and careful care of some of the nicest classic cars in the area,

ANeSU to screen preschoolers on Oct. 26

BRISTOL — The Early Education Program of Addison Northeast Supervisory Union will hold its developmental screenings on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

Children in the five-town area will have the opportunity to play in an early childhood classroom using art materials, blocks, puzzles and imaginative play materials. Parents can share information about their child with the Early Ed staff and learn more about their child’s communication, social, play and motor skills. The screening is free and will take about one hour.

Bristol to host town Halloween party Oct. 28

BRISTOL — Waitsfield Champlain Valley Telecom is teaming up with the Bristol Recreation Department to host a Children’s Halloween Party on Friday, Oct. 28, from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. at Holley Hall.

Everyone is encouraged to wear costumes!

There will be music, activities and refreshments, including pizza and healthy snacks. The event is free and open to children of all ages.

5-town firefighter food drive scheduled for Oct. 22

BRISTOL — Fall has “officially” arrived and winter won’t be far behind and with it the struggles that many of our neighbors have in meeting the additional costs associated with cold weather.

With that in mind, the second annual 5-Town Fire Department Food Drive is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon.

In 2015, the drive collected over 5,000 pounds of food and $700 in cash donations.

Bristol to host hearing on pro-growth zoning laws

BRISTOL — The Bristol Planning Commission is seeking feedback from Bristol residents on its proposed changes to town zoning that aim to increase development to build a bigger tax base. It will explain the changes and take feedback in a hearing Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m., in the town offices at Holley Hall.
