Bristol to host hearing on pro-growth zoning laws

BRISTOL — The Bristol Planning Commission is seeking feedback from Bristol residents on its proposed changes to town zoning that aim to increase development to build a bigger tax base. It will explain the changes and take feedback in a hearing Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m., in the town offices at Holley Hall.

ANeSU unification will build community, superintendent says

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Superintendent Patrick Reen supports the potential unification of budgets and school governance in the five town area for a simple reason: It would be good for the kids.

“For me, the number one reason why this change is important is because it allows this organization to focus on what it wants to achieve for kids in a way that it hasn’t ever been able to do before,” Reen said.

Bristol bares all in risque calendar for Holley Hall

BRISTOL — A group of Bristol residents have proven their willingness to bare all for Holley Hall.

This Saturday at the Bristol Harvest Festival they will unveil the “Bristol Au Naturel” calendar, featuring naked residents posed “discretely” at a number of favorite Bristol locales.

Students weigh in on curriculum, as Mount Abe transforms approach to middle school

BRISTOL — “If you could pick anything in the world, what are some things you’d like to learn about?” asks Mount Abraham Union Middle School teacher Jocelyn Foran.

Every last head in Foran’s seventh grade classroom bends over as students start thinking in earnest, chewing on pencils, scratching down ideas and brainstorming.

Bristol blood drive set for Sept. 20

BRISTOL — Bristol will host a blood donation site during National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. The American Red Cross urges eligible donors to give blood in September to help ensure a stable and diverse blood supply for patients in need.

Blood donors may be helping patients like 11-year-old Martin Mwita, who has sickle cell disease. His body doesn’t produce enough healthy red cells to carry adequate oxygen through his body, so he relies on monthly transfusions to stabilize his health.

Bus offered for Tour de Farms

BRISTOL — ACORN continues its mission to support and strengthen the local food economy in Vermont’s Champlain Valley with the 9th Annual Tour de Farms — an annual ride that sends bikers around to various farms in the Bristol area, where they can stop and sample local products.

This year, however, ACORN is reaching beyond cyclists; if you don’t ride a bike, you can ride the inaugural Tour de Farm Bus or join the fun at the after party.

Scores of friends help Margaret Owen celebrate her 90th

BRISTOL — Margaret Owen and about 68 friends celebrated her 90th birthday on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 4, at the First Baptist Church of Bristol.

Music was provided by David Henderson, Jenny Telling and Stephanie Ahern and included the “Margaret Waltz” and a song that was written by Owen, herself, and Telling. The words were a poem that Owen had written about her faith in the Lord, which she called “My Friend.”

Work begins on Bristol Village housing project

BRISTOL — A somewhat unusual housing development planned for the center of Bristol has broken ground on property off North Street behind the Rite Aid and Shaw’s shopping area.

Bristol Village Cohousing, a 14-unit project that bills itself as an “eco-village” is inviting the public to a ribbon cutting ceremony this Saturday, Sept. 10, at 11:30 a.m. at 16 North St. After the event, tours of the site will be available.

The first units will be ready for occupancy in January and the entire project is slated to be completed next April.
