Public to meet Bristol Elementary principal finalists this Wednesday

BRISTOL — The Bristol School Board on Wednesday evening will host a meet-the-community event for the two Bristol Elementary School principal finalists — one face should be familiar to locals and the other is new to the area.

Justin Bouvier, a math teacher at Mount Abraham Union High School, and Kevin Robinson, Abu Dhabi Education Council Director of Schools, are candidates for the job currently held by Sandy Jump, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

Man escapes after high speed chase, turns self in later

BRISTOL — A 19-year-old Randolph man turned himself in to the Williston barracks of the Vermont State Police on May 2 following a high-speed chase through Chittenden and Addison counties the night of April 30.

Alexander Tracy faces charges in Addison and Chittenden counties, including eluding police, gross negligent driving, violating conditions of release and speeding. He was jailed for lack of $5,000 bail, according to a press release by Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs.

Bristol police investigate suspicious men

BRISTOL — Police in Bristol are looking into a report of suspicious men looking for unoccupied homes.

Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs reports that at around 1:20 p.m. on Friday, April 29, a resident of Lower Meadow Lane reported a man came to her door wearing a Casella uniform shirt and told her that he worked for the electric company in the area and was preparing to do some tree cutting near power lines.

Over 100 students compete in ANeSU DCF tournament

BRISTOL — The 5-Town Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Tournament took over the Mount Abraham Union High School library on the morning of Monday, April 11. Excitement was high. There were over 100 students participating this year, with 10 from Bristol Elementary School.

Upper elementary students from Bristol, Beeman, Robinson, Lincoln and Monkton were on mixed-school teams. Team members met together on the morning of the tournament.

Bristol store basking in glow of new solar array

BRISTOL — Bristol Beverage and Redemption Center is now catching some rays — 24.795 kW worth, to be exact.

With 87 roof-mounted solar panels installed in mid-April (plus two heat pumps), owner Adam LaPerle expects to cut his electricity bill in half and to eliminate the use of propane-based heating in his retail space entirely.

Bristol business park hinges on water bond vote

BRISTOL — The vote next Tuesday, May 10, on the $1.1 million water bond could be a crucial step in Bristol’s 20-year quest to build a business park with the capacity not only to incubate but to retain and grow businesses.

“People in Bristol are really passionate about Bristol,” said planning commission member John Elder. “I think a lot of people are devoted to this town but it needs the shot in the arm that would come with allowing successful businesses to grow. Everybody’s agreed about that for a quarter century.”

Bristol looks for a new elementary school principal

BRISTOL — The search is under way for a new principal at Bristol Elementary School, and Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Assistant Superintendent Catrina DiNapoli, who is spearheading the search, said nearly 20 applicants have applied for the position.

Current BES Principal Sandy Jump notified Interim Superintendent Armando Vilaseca in March that she would be retiring effective on July 1.

BRISTOL — “What our players and what the Cuban players ... did in those six days did more for government relations between our two countries than has been done in the last 40 years by the governments,” Little League baseball coach Jim Carter said.

Carter, retired University of Vermont baseball coach and grandfather of Bristol 12-year-old Carter Monks, was referring to the trip that he, Monks and 10 other Vermont Little League baseball players made to Cuba last week.

Bristol police will dispose of medication dropped of Saturday

BRISTOL — The Bristol Police Department has will hold a Drug Take Back event this Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents of the five-town area — Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro — can drop off their unused or expired medications at the Bristol Police Department at 72 Munsill Ave. at BristolWorks so that they can be properly disposed of.

Bristol seeks $1.1 million for new water main

BRISTOL — The 110-year-old water main along West Street in Bristol is overdue for replacement, according to selectboard members and engineers they hired.

At a public hearing on Monday evening, they explained why Bristol residents should approve a $1,115,020 bond to replace a large portion of the West Street line and extend the town water system to Lovers Lane. A vote by Australian ballot will be held May 10.
