Bristol firehouse cost estimate due

BRISTOL — The Bristol Fire Facility Committee is expected at a meeting this Tuesday evening, May 19, to unveil a construction estimate for a new West Street firehouse.

That meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be held at the Bristol Federated Church at 37 North St.

Body cameras lead Bristol to update police policies

BRISTOL — Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs on Monday updated the Bristol selectboard on his department’s policies, most notably changes in its Video/Audio/Still Recording Equipment Policy that were triggered by the department’s purchase of body cameras.

Town Administrator Therese Kirby said the previous policy was so outdated that it “used to refer to tapes.” The updated policy spells out how the digital footage and audio captured by the body cameras is stored, how it may be accessed, and who may access the material.

Third vote on Mt. Abe budget set for June 9

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School board is asking Addison Northeast Supervisory Union voters to mark their calendars for June 9, when the board expects to hold a vote on a third proposed FY 2016 spending plan for the school.

“The process of developing that new budget will be worked on over the next few weeks,” said board chair Dawn Griswold in a statement.

Bristol still wrestling with landfill closing plan

BRISTOL — Representatives from Casella Waste Systems on Monday met with the Bristol selectboard to discuss a possible deal through which the trash hauler would help the town fill and close its landfill.

Bristol officials reached out to the Rutland waste management company after efforts to get the state to help pay for landfill closing costs were unsuccessful.

ANeSU to bring in a mediator; board hopes to improve climate

BRISTOL — The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Executive Committee at a special meeting Thursday pledged to address what it characterized as a “deteriorated environment” in the district’s six schools.

“The committee recognizes the need for an immediate assessment of current conditions,” the committee said in a prepared statement.

Pocock music festival to take hiatus until 2016

BRISTOL — Pocock Rocks, Bristol’s annual summer music festival on Main Street, will not happen this year, but organizers said it will make a triumphant return in 2016.

The Bristol Downtown Community Partnership, the principal organizer of the event, decided not to hold Pocock this year because of a lack of resources.

“We didn’t have enough hands to pull it off,” said BDCP board member Darla Senecal, who also serves as Bristol’s recreation director.

New housing complex in Bristol nearly complete

BRISTOL — Construction crews in Bristol are busy completing a new, 12-unit apartment building on Plank Road.

The property is owned by Stanley Livingston and the project is managed by his company, Meghan’s Meadow View LLC.

The 6,300-square-foot building will have six two-bedroom and six one-bedroom apartments. It is located on a 2.1-acre plot at 7986 Plank Road, the former site of Roy’s Automotive.

German student gets taste of American life at Mount Abe

BRISTOL — A German exchange student at Mount Abraham Union High School is eager to see more of the United States, and is competing in a contest that would send him to California.

Hendrik Schubinski, 16, is spending the school year with the Knight family in Bristol — parents Porter and David, and sons Bryson and Liam.

To do it, he’s taken a year off from his secondary school in Germany to participate in AFS, a global student exchange program based in the United States.

Voters reject Mount Abe, Bristol school budgets again

BRISTOL — Voters in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union rejected two of the three school budgets up for consideration Tuesday. It is the latest chapter in a tumultuous spring for the district, which has also seen a citizens petition calling for the removal of the superintendent and a near-unanimous vote of no confidence in his leadership by the teachers’ union.

Residents rejected spending plans for Mount Abraham Union High School by a tally of 755 to 485, and Bristol Elementary School, 224 to 166.
