BRISTOL — Conservationists in Bristol are looking to protect a 194-acre parcel of land in the northwest corner of town, which they say provides a large chunk of habitat for the Indiana bat, Vermont’s only federally endangered mammal.

The parcel would also extend the scope of the Waterworks, a 664-acre park conserved in the 1990s by the Watershed Center, a Bristol non-profit that converted the land from the one-time Vergennes City reservoir into a popular recreational and wildlife refuge on Plank Street.

Bristol to vote on $1.5M stormwater project

By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — Bristol voters will take to the polls on Tuesday, Aug. 25, to weigh in on a $1.5 million bond to fund stormwater system upgrades on North Street.

If the bond vote is approved, the town could be in line for stimulus funding that could pay for as much as half of that project. Town officials have said that if the stimulus money falls through, they won’t move forward on the stormwater improvements — but Bristol residents have to approve the bond first if the town is to be eligible for the government funds, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

BRISTOL — A father-daughter sock hop? No thanks, say one Bristol dad and his daughter.

Tim and Molly Eaton, 50 and 18, respectively, prefer to do their bonding at 230 miles an hour, 8,000 feet above the Atlantic Ocean.

That’s how the two experienced a day in the life of a fighter pilot, through a program called Air Combat U.S.A. The program let the pair — both flight enthusiasts — pilot SIAI Marchetti SF-260 jets through air combat maneuvers with the assistance of trained fighter pilots.

Bristol pastor arrives on a wing and a prayer

By KATHRYN FLAGG
BRISTOL — It’s the usual work of a man of the cloth: comfort the dying and celebrate with the living.

So, in many ways, it was business as usual for the Rev. Bill Elwell, pastor of Bristol Federated Church, who buried an old friend one recent Saturday morning, consoled the family and friends left behind, and then quickly switched gears that afternoon to perform the marriage ceremony for a joyful Bristol couple.

But looking back on June 20, Elwell admits it was a day that was anything but ordinary.
