Cornwall appeals to Shumlin on pipeline

CORNWALL — The Cornwall selectboard has asked the Shumlin Administration to oppose the proposed Vermont Gas Systems pipeline from Middlebury to the International Paper Co. mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y., and instead work with VGS on a financing plan to plot a pipeline route directly from Middlebury south to Rutland.

Vt. Gas launches 'Phase II' of its planned Addison County pipeline

ADDISON COUNTY — As Vermont Gas Systems on Thursday formally announced plans to advance its proposed “Phase II” natural gas pipeline from Middlebury to the International Paper Co. in Ticonderoga, N.Y., officials in the two towns principally affected by the project readied for potentially rancorous talks with the gas company.

Vermont Gas begins application for Phase II pipeline

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont Gas Systems today, Oct. 3, announced plans to advance its proposed “Phase II” pipeline segment from Middlebury to the International Paper Co. in Ticonderoga, N.Y. Officials from Vermont Gas anticipate filing a formal petition with the Vermont Public Service Board around Nov. 19.

Super volunteers to be honored at Pops Concert

MIDDLEBURY — For their active, longtime volunteer service to the Middlebury community, the Sheldon Museum will recognize “T” and Cy Tall as the honorary chairs of the 21st annual Pops Concert and Fireworks Display to be held on Friday, June 28, on the grounds behind Middlebury College’s Mahaney Center for the Arts. The grounds open at 5:30 p.m., the Vermont Philharmonic Pops Concert starts at 7:30 p.m., and the evening concludes triumphantly at dark with a spectacular fireworks display.

Cornwall pushes back on proposed natural gas pipeline; more than 100 at meeting

CORNWALL — More than 100 Cornwall residents packed their school cafeteria on Wednesday, June 19, to send a collective message to Vermont Gas Systems: We don’t want your proposed pipeline and we are prepared to go to the courts and/or engage in civil disobedience to stop it.

“I will fight you tooth and nail,” vowed resident Mary Martin, who, with her husband Randy, owns one of the properties through which a natural gas transmission line would travel on its way from Middlebury to the International Paper (IP) mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

Cornwall hires Hackett to serve as new principal

CORNWALL — Susan M. Hackett, a Rutland County educator and past principal of the Plymouth and Sunderland elementary schools, has been named the new top administrator of Cornwall’s Bingham Memorial School.

“I’m thrilled,” Hackett, 53, said in reaction to accepting the job, extended to her by the Cornwall School Board Thursday evening after a thorough interview.

“I think the school is a wonderful match for me.”

Cornwall student serves up cookbook to help children in Africa

CORNWALL — When 9-year-old Sarah Holmes did some research on Africa earlier this year, she was astonished with some of the things she read.

“I looked up a video on Africa that showed how kids there are not being treated as well as they are here,” she said. “There are sicknesses there that are preventable, but they don’t have enough money.”

So Sarah, a 3rd-grade student at Cornwall’s Bingham Memorial School, brought the dilemma to her young classmates and teacher Janne Giles to see what they could do.

Habitat for Humanity builds first of four homes in Cornwall

CORNWALL — Angela McCluskey had grown tired of seeing her son Jonathan turn in for the night on the living room couch in their small apartment while she and her daughter Caitlin got to sleep in beds.

So McCluskey took what she believed was a long shot: She applied to become the owner of one of four new Habitat for Humanity homes to be built within a 13-acre subdivision off Cornwall’s Delong Road.
