CORNWALL — The disparity between low-income students and middle- and high-income students progressing to college is growing wider, according to Rick Dalton, founder, president and CEO of the Cornwall-based nonprofit College For Every Student, of CFES.

Fortunately, a University of Michigan study released last month is proving that the organization’s efforts to get underserved students to college is working.

Lemon Fair Bridge opens up early to traffic

By John Flowers

CORNWALL — The new Lemon Fair Bridge on Route 125 in Cornwall officially opened to traffic on Nov. 23 — substantially ahead of schedule, though the project won’t be fully completed until next spring.

Vermont Agency of Transportation resident engineer Joe Knipes noted the project hadn’t been scheduled for completion until Nov. 4, 2011. But contractors — Montgomery-based A.L. St. Onge — were able to give extra attention to the project this summer and fall as a result of the challenging economy and good weather, according to Knipes.

Historic painted curtains take center stage

Posted on October 28, 2010 |
By John Flowers

CORNWALL — Christine Hadsel and Suki Fredericks picked up what looked like a ratty, rolled-up drop-cloth and placed it on an expansive table in the Cornwall town office conference room late last week.

But as they gently unfurled the fabric, it became clear that this was not a piece of throwaway fabric.

Each turn of the roll revealed more real estate of a beautifully painted, late-summer lake scene, replete with lush trees surrounding an azure waterway with rolling hills in the background.

CORNWALL — Gary Margolis is indeed reaching lofty heights for his poetry prowess.

It wasn’t long ago that he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his third collection of poems, “Fire in the Orchard.”

This past spring he released his fourth book, titled “Below the Falls,” inspired by the emotional search in 2008 for missing Middlebury College student Nicholas Garza.

By John S. McCright

web_roadwork5470.jpg

CORNWALL/WHITING — After enduring the next few months of traffic delays on Route 30 south of Middlebury, drivers should enjoy not only a smooth new road surface, but also a much wider roadway to share with bikers, runners and other pedestrians.

Pike Industries last week began the $3.7 million project to upgrade nearly 12 miles of Route 30 from the Whiting-Sudbury line north through Cornwall into Middlebury near the golf course.

CORNWALL — Construction crews have been busy preparing a temporary span on which to divert Route 125 traffic during the upcoming replacement of the Lemon Fair Bridge in Cornwall.

CORNWALL — People have been shearing alpacas in South America for centuries — among other things, the famous ponchos of Chile are made from Alpaca fleece.

But now, the popularity of alpacas is growing in the Northern Hemisphere, and companies ranging from Armani to REI are using the hair.

On Thursday this movement north will continue, as more than 20 entrants from around the country will compete for the title of “Best Alpaca Shearer in North America” on the alpaca farm of Carol and Cass Tillman in Cornwall.

Moeykens moves on from Cornwall school

CORNWALL — Jennifer Moeykens has seen two generations of several families pass through Cornwall’s elementary school during her 34 years there as a teacher.

She jokes that the reason she’s retiring this month is because she doesn’t want to score enough longevity points to see the third generation roll in. Joking aside, she’ll be leaving the school with fond memories and vows to remain active during the next phase of her life outside the classroom.

Paging William Conlon: Cornwall teen to view politics in D.C.

Posted on June 7, 2010 |
By John Flowers

web_willconlon.jpg

CORNWALL — William Conlon got his first up-close-and-personal taste of politics last month when he won election as next year’s 11th-grade class president at Middlebury Union High School.

It will be an abbreviated term for the new office-holder, but that’s OK. That’s because Conlon will be leaving MUHS next January to spend five months on arguably the biggest political stage in the world — Washington, D.C., where Conlon will spend about five months as a U.S. Senate page representing the state of Vermont.
