Vergennes Police Log: Former city resident cited for sexual assault on 15-year-old

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Monday, Jan. 23, cited a 23-year-old former city resident with sexual assault on a female under the age of 16, a charge Chief George Merkel said was filed after a long investigation largely conducted by Officer Jason Ouellette.

Cited to appear in Addison District Court on March 5 to answer the charge was Christopher J. Edwards, who police described as now transient, but once a resident of Green Street.

Middlebury Police Log: Erratic driving lands driver with a DUI citation

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Brian Alexander, 22, of Lincoln, Mass., for driving under the influence, following a stop on Court Street on Jan. 21. Police said they pulled over Alexander because they had seen him driving erratically.

Police said they measured Alexander’s blood-alcohol content at 0.158 percent. The legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent.

Vermont State Police Log: Icy roads cause accidents

ADDISON COUNTY — On Tuesday, Jan. 17, a rainy day with temperatures near freezing, Vermont State Police responded to a two-car accident on Green Street in Waltham at around 1:45 p.m.

Vergennes Police Log: City residents meet to tackle drug concerns

VERGENNES — Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel estimated about 100 area residents attended a Jan. 11 meeting that was the follow-up to last month’s forum on drug trafficking and substance abuse in the Vergennes area.

Merkel said those who attended broke into groups to brainstorm what is hoped to be an effort to curb illegal drug use and sales in the area.

Middlebury Police Log: Local woman cited for assault

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Kimber I. Mills, 23, of Middlebury for domestic assault, following an alleged fight at a Route 7 South residence on Jan. 15. Police said the victim alleged that Mills had stabbed him “multiple times” with a pair of scissors.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•Received, from an honest person, an endorsed check found in the Merchants Row area on Jan. 9. Police called the person who had lost the check.

•Went to the scene of a vehicle-deer crash on Route 30 on Jan. 9.

ADDISON COUNTY — A Brandon man on Monday night was rushed to the hospital with head injuries he sustained when the car he was driving was struck by a tractor-trailer on Route 7 in Leicester.

Vermont State Police Log: Man cited for stealing, wrecking cars

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police this week cited a Barton man into court for stealing and wrecking two vehicles from Hancock.

On this past Nov. 5, troopers from the Royalton VSP barracks responded to a Route 125 home in Hancock for reports of two stolen vehicles. Trooper Slusser reported that investigation revealed that Tyler Norris, 20, of Barton in the Northeast Kingdom took a vehicle owned by Ashley Brown of Hancock and crashed it nearby.

Middlebury Police Log: Alleged thief returns to the scene of the crime

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Virginia L. Gillett, 27, of Salisbury for retail theft, in connection with an incident at Green Mountain Shoe and Apparel in The Centre shopping plaza on Jan. 1. Store officials reported having a video of Gillett stealing a pair of shoes that she allegedly wore to the store the very next day, according to police.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a report of a vehicle stuck in the Creek Road Car Wash on Jan. 2.

Vergennes Police Log: Vergennes man cited for DUI

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Jan. 2 cited a city man for driving under the influence of alcohol, an action taken after they received a phone call from a citizen alleging the man had offered the caller alcohol while both drivers were stopped at a stop sign.

Police said they saw a gold Honda Pilot fitting the description provided by the caller on Route 7 north of Vergennes, and then followed the vehicle before stopping it on Main Street.

Vergennes Police Log: Vergennes man charged in jewelry theft

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Dec. 28 charged a city man with stealing jewelry, much of it antique, from a family member at a Mountain View Lane home.

Cited was Nicholas Piper, 33, for grand larceny; police said they questioned him after the theft. Police allege that he stole jewelry that the victim estimated was worth between $5,000 and $10,000 and said that they recovered many of the items from pawnshops in Burlington and South Burlington.
