Vermont State Police Log: Troopers track down drunk drivers

ADDISON COUNTY — The week spanning the last two days of December and the first five of January was a relatively quiet one for Vermont State Police with only a handful of serious incidents reported by troopers during that stretch.

Middlebury Police Log: Police investigate alleged home break-in

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated a burglary at a South Street residence on Dec. 31. Police said someone allegedly broke into a locked safe sometime during the past seven years and stole “several thousand dollars” worth of items.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to call Middlebury police at 388-3191.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a noise complaint in the South Pleasant Street neighborhood on Dec. 29.

State aims to update renewable energy policies

MONTPELIER — The Department of Public Service in December announced it will make changes to the state’s renewable energy program in an attempt to encourage solar growth while protecting ratepayers.

With the Legislature in its upcoming session also likely to update laws that encourage more renewable energy in the Green Mountain State, Vermonters can expect to see continuing efforts to nurture solar power in 2015, though with a slightly different flavor.

Vergennes Police Log: Cops have quiet holiday week

VERGENNES — In a mostly quiet week between Dec. 22 and 28 Vergennes police handled relatively minor issues, including the theft of holiday decorations, traffic problems, and more violations of the city’s wintertime ban on overnight on-street parking.

In those seven days, Vergennes police:

•  On Dec. 22 checked the welfare of a male John Graham Shelter resident, who had been reported to be depressed, and determined he was OK.

•  On Dec. 22 helped a motorist get into a locked car.

Bristol Police Log: Cops arrest three during Christmas week

BRISTOL — Bristol police made three arrests during Christmas week. Two were for driving-related offenses while one was related to domestic violence.

Police on Christmas Eve arrested Bristol resident Timothy Sousa, 27, on suspicion of second-degree aggravated domestic assault stemming from a dispute with his girlfriend on Dec. 22. Police said Sousa, who was previously convicted of domestic assault and also for violating an abuse prevention order, struck his girlfriend in the head during an argument.

Middlebury Police Log: Police investigate assault claim

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police received a complaint from a man who claimed another man tried to steal his backpack while he was walking on South Street near Porter Field Road on Dec. 28. Police described the assailant as a white man around 5 feet, 10 inches tall, wearing a red sweatshirt, and a goatee/soul patch facial hair.

The case remains under investigation.

Vergennes Police Log: Cops investigate fight at Northlands

VERGENNES — A total of seven Vergennes police officers and Vermont State Police troopers calmed a Dec. 15 fight involving a number of female Northlands Job Corps students, Vergennes police said, but police ended up electing not to file any charges.

When police arrived, they found a group of students yelling at Northlands security. Police settled down the situation and investigated, including interviewing a number of students, before deciding not to issue any citations.

Vermont State Police Log: Cops cite two men for DLS

ADDISON COUNTY — A few minutes before 10 a.m. on Dec. 16, Vermont State Police Trooper Justin Busby observed that the registration sticker was missing from the plates of a vehicle that had just driven up to the gas pumps at the Shoreham Service Center. The trooper questioned the driver, identified as 28-year-old Patrick Ryan of Richmond, about the registration sticker and determined that Patrick Ryan’s driver’s license was under criminal suspension for a prior driving under the influence conviction.

Middlebury Police Log: Police investigate death of town man

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police initiated a death investigation following the discovery of an unresponsive man in a snow bank off Elm Street during the afternoon of Thursday, Dec. 18.

Police said a passerby discovered the man and began performing CPR. Middlebury Regional EMS responded and took the man to Porter Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The deceased man has been identified as Michael Morgan, 55, of Middlebury. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Middlebury Police Department at 388-3191.
