By Zach Despart

MONKTON — Water quality tests done by the Lewis Creek Association late last week have determined that two swimming sites in northern Addison County are currently unsafe for swimming.

The sites, along Lewis Creek at Route 7 in Ferrisburgh and Tyler Bridge Road in Monkton, tested for unsafe levels of E. coli.

The E. coli levels at Tyler Bridge were 686.7 MPN per 100ml, the unit of measurement used to detect E. coli colonies. The Route 7 site tested at 272.3 MPN per 100ml. The state standard is 77 MPN per 100ml.

Ferrisburgh 2013-14 property transfers

Posted on July 17, 2014 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday set the town’s tax rates for the 2014-2015 fiscal year, and both residential and non-residential rates, as expected, saw significant increases.

The new overall residential rate is $1.7893, up by about 24 cents from the previous fiscal year rate of $1.5474. Treasurer Garrit Smits reminded the board, and about 10 residents at the town office building, that high per-pupil spending rates are pushing school tax rates higher.

FERRISBURGH — Denecker Chevrolet owner Tom Denecker told the Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday the Act 250 process for his proposed new site on town-owned land at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A has been lengthy, but he has made progress elsewhere toward his proposed $350,000 purchase from the town.

“We have been steadily moving the ball,” Denecker said. “Now there’s a bit of a mire going on.”

Local woman brings word from Afghanistan

FERRISBURGH — When people asked about her health last week, Ferrisburgh resident Mary Kerr told them she had “Kabul cough.”

The condition, she explained, results from a mixture of air pollution from cars and truck exhaust and dust kicked up in the dry areas in the Afghan capital. Kerr just returned from seven weeks teaching at a special boarding school for girls there.

Kerr will present a slideshow and give a talk on her experience in Afghanistan this Wednesday, June 25, at the Ilsley Public Library’s Community Room from 5-6:30 p.m.

Rokeby to exhibit 100-year-old NYC postcards by Vt. artist

Posted on June 12, 2014 |
By Phoebe Lewis

FERRISBURGH — As Rokeby Museum Director Jane Williamson researched artist Rachael Robinson Elmer, who grew up at the Rokeby homestead in the late 1800s, she read of a mysterious painting. The depiction of New York’s City Hall painted in the Impressionist style had been rejected from a series Elmer created for a group of 12 postcards in the early 1900s, and it had not been seen since.

What Williamson didn’t expect was to find the very painting in the Rokeby archives, where it had been nestled since Elmer’s death in 1919.

FerrisburghTeacher1594.jpg

VERGENNES — It was more than 50 years ago when Ferrisburgh Central School challenge and technology teacher Linda Thurber first stood in front of a class and taught.

At that point, Thurber, 65, who will retire at the end the week after a three-decade Addison Central Supervisory Union career, was a freshman at her hometown high school in Doylestown, Pa.

Her teacher, probably already sensing where Thurber’s path would lead her, asked Thurber if she wanted to take over for a while.
