Plank Road resident to drivers: Slow down!

FERRISBURGH — After hearing from a Plank Road resident whose wife had been hurt in an accident on that road in the southeastern corner of Ferrisburgh, the town selectboard said at its Nov. 17 meeting it would take steps to make a stretch of Plank Road safer, probably in cooperation with neighboring towns.

$67K grant to Lewis Creek Association will fund cleaning of Vermont waterways

CHARLOTTE — A grant awarded to a local group aims to protect and improve water quality by helping landowners make their properties more resilient in the face of floods.

Lewis Creek Association was awarded $67,254 from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Clean Water Initiative Program to launch the new Ahead of the Storm (AOTS) water quality stewardship program that highlights pollution prevention.

Ferrisburgh eyeing deal with Vergennes police

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard will consider during its upcoming budget talks whether to propose spending up to $25,000 a year for 10 hours a week of service from the Vergennes Police Department, board members said at their Nov. 17 meeting.

Board members said they would make the decision to include that or a lesser amount in the 2016-2017 municipal budget after hearing from Vergennes City Manager Mel Hawley and Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel about what city police could offer Ferrisburgh.

Ferrisburgh to ask for sweeter deal on 'green' power line

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard at its Nov. 17 meeting said it would appoint a three-member committee to negotiate a memorandum of understanding with the companies proposing a $600 million, 400-megawatt underground power line that would run under Ferrisburgh roads from Kingsland Bay to Route 7 on its way to a New Haven converter station.

Gonyeau sentenced to probation in death of bicyclist

MIDDLEBURY — The Ferrisburgh resident who was driving under the influence of alcohol on June 17 when her car struck and killed a Charlotte physician bicycling on Greenbush Road in Ferrisburgh was on Monday sentenced to a year’s probation and 80 days of community service in the Addison County Superior Court.

Judge Samuel Hoar handed down that sentence, to which was also attached a lengthy list of conditions that included drug and alcohol screening and substance abuse treatment, after Holly Gonyeau, 36, changed her plea from innocent to no contest.

Power line developer sweetens offer to Ferrisburgh

FERRISBURGH — Representatives of the companies proposing a $600 million underground power line that would run through Ferrisburgh told about 20 residents and officials on Thursday they were prepared to pay the town at least $350,000 a year for 20 years on top of an estimated $150,000 a year in local taxes the project would generate.

According to a document displayed at the evening meeting in the town office building’s community center, the companies would also “escalate that payment by a mutually agreed index.”

Supreme Court sends Basin Harbor array back to PSB

FERRISBURGH — An opponent of Basin Harbor Club’s 150-kilowatt solar array last week won a Vermont Supreme Court decision against the Public Service Board.

Ferrisburgh wildlife program on tap for Oct. 21

FERRISBURGH — Vermont’s Department of Fish & Wildlife Conservation Planning Biologist Jens Hilke will present “Where the Wild Things Are,” a program and conversation about local wildlife, on Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Ferrisburgh Community Center and Town Offices.

The event includes a historical look at the region and discussion of who lives here, current issues, and what can be done to protect vital habitat.
