Denecker dealership slated for makeover

MIDDLEBURY — It has indeed been a very eventful seven months for local businessmen Tom Denecker and Mike Capra.

This past December, the two owners of Denecker Chevrolet, Inc. in Vergennes completed the purchase of Shea Motors in Middlebury.

Now the duo are proposing a major reconstruction of their new acquisition at 510 Route 7 South in Middlebury in an effort to make it more user-friendly, energy efficient and in keeping with the style and color scheme of other General Motors buildings throughout the nation.

Middlebury's town zoning director leaving for college job

MIDDLEBURY — Ted Dunakin confirmed last week that July 2 will be his last day as Middlebury’s director of planning and zoning. His imminent departure — to serve as a maintenance project manager at Middlebury College — comes at a time when the community was already looking for a new town planner to replace Eric Blair, who left earlier this year to take a job with the Orton Family Foundation.

Family turns beans into treats

MIDDLEBURY — Under the first tent of the Middlebury Farmers’ Market in the Marble Works District, one Shoreham family has used unconventional ingredients to transform typical baked goods into vegan, gluten-free treats.

Business community honors leaders

MIDDLEBURY — Cornwall residents Becky and Chris Dayton and Exchange Street business Maple Landmark Woodcraft were honored as Citizens of the Year and Business of the Year, respectively, by the Better Middlebury Partnership at the organization’s annual meeting this past Thursday evening.

Out-going president Ben Wilson, who has held the post for the past three years, presented the honors to the 65 members gathered at the Middlebury Inn along with brief remarks.

Local man charged with sex crimes

MIDDLEBURY — Austin Burnett, a 21-year-old Middlebury man, pleaded innocent on June 19 in Chittenden Superior Court, criminal division, to three felony counts of sexual assault without consent, in connection with alleged encounters he had with three separate teenage girls during the past two years.

The charges are the culmination of three separate investigations: One by Det. Lt. Ruth Whitney of the Addison County Unit for Special Investigations, and two by Det. Kris Bowdish of the Middlebury Police Department.

Porter Hospital's North Wing to bear Daily's name

MIDDLEBURY — In recognition of Jim Daily’s 31 years of service and commitment to Porter Medical Center, the PMC Board of Directors announced last week the re-dedication of the hospital’s “North Wing” as the “James L. Daily North Wing.”

“The North Wing exists due to Jim’s foresight and leadership,” said Maureen McLaughlin, Porter Medical Center Board chairperson. “He has taken Porter Hospital from the days of ‘Big Brother’ (1984) to Big Pharma.

Middlebury police opt for Tasers as non-lethal alternative

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday green-lighted their local police department’s proposal to acquire Tasers, a device that officials believe will better enable officers to control aggressive and assaultive suspects without having to resort to deadly force.

“Taser” is the product name for what police refer to as a “Conducted Electrical Weapon (CEW)” that uses an electrical charge to disrupt muscle control in a suspect to which it is applied.

Welch visits with local dairy, spirits makers

MIDDLEBURY — Rep. Peter Welch this past Friday convened a meeting of Vermont’s distillery industry leaders to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing this growing sector of Vermont’s economy. The Democratic Congressman also visited the Agri-Mark cheese-making plant while in Middlebury.

At the meeting of the distillers at Stonecutter Spirits headquarters off Exchange Street in Middlebury, Welch announced his support for bipartisan legislation to provide tax incentives for Vermont’s distilleries.
