MIDDLEBURY — On Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m., the Henry Sheldon Museum and its alliance partner Historic New England present “The Spirit of Christmas Past: Four Centuries of Christmas in New England.”

Kenneth Turino, manager of Community Engagement and Exhibitions at Historic New England, offers a well-illustrated lecture tracing the development of Christmas celebrations from 17th century New England through today. Many of the customs we assume are rooted in the past are actually a product of more recent history.

A local nonprofit takes on parental leave issue

MIDDLEBURY— Three years ago, Bridget Gosselin’s professional and personal lives were facing shakeups of major proportions.

She was pregnant with her daughter, Vivienne, and anticipating the challenges of being a single mom. And while she was entitled to up to 12 weeks of unpaid parental leave under Vermont law, her Burlington employer was not among the few in the Green Mountain State that offer benefits to bridge the costs of the first few months of being out of work to care for a new baby.

Kids 4 Peace guests tell stories of hope

MIDDLEBURY— “There’s a war going on. A war that has caused the colors of life to leave the bodies of those whose names you ascribe to fear. I will never forget how much death loves these people.”

Lena Ginawi, a slam poet and junior at South Burlington High School, stood in front of about 20 Middlebury residents last Friday in an apartment in the Marble Works Condos and recited those words.

Mary Hogan students took part in presidential election

MIDDLEBURY — Perhaps more than any U.S. Election cycle in recent history, that of 2016 offered rich and diverse opportunities for young learners.

At Middlebury’s Mary Hogan Elementary School, Ms. Levesque’s sixth-grade class engaged in a study of the two major party candidates. Students researched their professional backgrounds as well as their policies on taxes, education, the economy and the environment. They then prepared a visual display providing information for Mary Hogan’s entire student body.

Honestly, most of us would rather ditch the formalities, plop on the couch and surf the web. And what does surfing always boil down to? Cat videos. Don't worry your not alone; in fact, the Town Hall Theater and Homeward Bound have had so much success with their annual Cat Video Festival, they're hosting another festival for the third year on Saturday, Nov. 26.

New Middlebury dog park nears funding goal

MIDDLEBURY — Organizers of a new Middlebury dog park are in the stretch drive to raise the final $3,000 it will take to pay for the fencing that will encircle the roughly two-acre property adjacent to the Porter Medical Center campus. Boosters would like to see construction begin on the park before the snow flies, though they will not begin work until they have the entire $15,000 fence budget in hand.
