Shaw named top fire chief in the state

MIDDLEBURY — David Shaw devotes hundred of hours every year to the Middlebury Fire Department. It is not just training on the best ways to pour water on a fire. The modern fire department is also called out to rescue people in lakes and rivers, stuck on the ice, and clinging to the sides of a mountain. Plus there is containment and cleanup of hazardous materials.

Middlebury, college ink land swap deal

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday unanimously approved an agreement with Middlebury College that formalizes a property swap that will lead to new municipal offices, a new recreation center and a new public park.

Local voters have already endorsed the town-gown deal, which calls for Middlebury to convey its current municipal building/gymnasium property at 94 Main St., along with another parcel at 6 Cross St., to the college.

Student weaves winning tale

MIDDLEBURY — Seven-year-old Joshua Kafumbe of Middlebury wants to be a policeman when he gets older.

But the incoming second-grader at Mary Hogan Elementary School might also consider a career in writing, given his performance in the most recent national Public Broadcasting System’s KIDS Writers Contest.

College sees $49.9 million in donations

MIDDLEBURY — Fundraising improved significantly at Middlebury College over the last 12 months compared to the previous fiscal year, the school announced on July 25.

During the 2014 fiscal year, which ended on June 30, the college received more than $49.9 million in philanthropic support. This amount is $7 million more than the previous year, according to a college press release.

Saturday events to support Matthew Power memorial fund

MIDDLEBURY — Friends and family of the late Matthew Power, a revered international journalist and Middlebury College graduate, will hold a yard sale and silent auction this Saturday, Aug. 2, to raise funds for a new, contemplative garden and seating area at the Otter Creek Falls in downtown Middlebury.

Born in Middlebury and raised in Cornwall, Power attended Middlebury Union High School.

He lost his life at age 39 this past March 10 while on assignment for Men’s Journal covering a story along the banks of the Nile River in Uganda.

Travis Forbes resigns from Middlebury's selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Selectman Travis Forbes resigned suddenly and unexpectedly Tuesday night, citing mounting personal and professional time commitments and frustration over what he indicated was his inability to influence operations at the Middlebury Department of Public Works.

Forbes, 35, was first elected to the selectboard in 2010 in a successful write-in campaign, and won re-election in 2013. He and his family run Case Street Redi-Mix Inc.

Middlebury Police Log: Wandering boy reunited with Mom

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police located the mother of a young boy found wandering in the roadway near the Pulp Mill Bridge on July 21. Police located the child’s mother and have referred the matter to state officials.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Were informed that someone had taken a checkbook from a Buttolph Drive residence on July 21.

Middlebury residents can pay library fines with food

MIDDLEBURY — If you find you have overdue fines at Middlebury’s Ilsley Public Library this August, be sure to bring peanut butter, diapers, soup, fruits or veggies with you when you return your books.

From Aug. 1-15, Ilsley patrons with outstanding fines will be able to pay them off with canned foods instead of cash.

MIDDLEBURY — Downtown Middlebury is home to the new Curve Appeal lingerie shop, offering lingerie in sizes for every body type, plus nontoxic, organic sensual products like massage oils.

Curve Appeal owner Kristin Lawson, a mother of three, has been doing house parties for women all over Vermont for nearly 10 years, and said her party customers expressed dissatisfaction with the lingerie options available to them in the area.
